This landmark deal, the first under a $150 million U.S. State Department award, will provide nationwide drone delivery coverage. The partnership introduces urban delivery services to Africa for the first time and establishes a new robotics research hub in the country.

The nation was the first to launch Zipline's services and now leads again in scaling this life-saving technology. Expanding Nationwide Coverage and Capabilities
A key component of the expansion is a new long-range distribution center in the Karongi District, complementing existing hubs. This third site will extend Zipline's reach to remote communities, including those bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Karongi hub is projected to serve approximately 200 health posts and reach an additional 2.9 million people.
For the first time in Africa, Zipline will deploy its Platform 2 (P2) urban delivery system in the capital city of Kigali. This advanced system is designed for quiet and precise deliveries in dense environments, where a significant portion of the country's healthcare demand is located. The P2 drones will deliver medical supplies with dinner-plate accuracy, transforming urban logistics.
Fostering Innovation and Local Talent
Zipline will also establish its first overseas research and development facility in Rwanda, dedicated to AI and robotics. This testing center will play a crucial role in advancing aircraft performance, safety systems, and next-generation logistics software. The hub is expected to cultivate local talent and support the creation of approximately 350 high-skill jobs within the country.

The agreement is supported by an innovative pay-for-performance financial model that ensures long-term sustainability. The U.S. government is providing upfront funding for the necessary infrastructure through a Department of State award. Subsequently, the Government of Rwanda has committed to paying for ongoing delivery operations, ensuring the system is nationally operated and financially durable.
Measurable Impact on Public Health
The impact of Zipline's service on Rwanda's public health is already well-documented, including a reported 51% reduction in maternal deaths from postpartum hemorrhage. All logistics data from Zipline's operations integrates directly into the national health information system. This enhances real-time outbreak detection and strengthens coordinated emergency response capabilities across the country.
