OpenAI will merge ChatGPT and Codex usage limits for Plus, Pro, and Business plans starting in December. The company will replace separate allowances with one shared quota across both services. Usage will be measured in tokens, the units a model processes and generates.
How the shared quota works
More advanced models and complex tasks generally use more of a user's allowance. Simple Instant chat conversations will not draw from the shared quota. Users can view their combined remaining usage and reset times under Settings and Usage.
Why limits are changing
OpenAI is bringing the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience. The change merges ChatGPT and Codex into a single working environment. The company expects most users will not wait for resets more often than they do now.
Options at the limit
Users who exhaust the shared quota can wait for it to refresh. They can also upgrade to a higher-tier plan. A third option is to purchase additional credits for eligible features.
Users can monitor the combined remaining usage and reset times under Settings and Usage. OpenAI says it is preparing for the transition to help prevent workflow disruption. The shared allowance takes effect in December.
