OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work tabs into one interface. The company will test the redesign with select users before a wider release. Codex will remain a separate experience in the desktop app.
What users can do
Users will be able to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through in one place. They can bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do tasks on the web. They can review and guide the work as it progresses.
Shared usage allowance
Plus, Pro, and Business plans will share a usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex starting in December. Usage will be measured in tokens, and advanced models or complex tasks may use more. Instant chat will not draw from the shared balance.
Tracking and limits
Users can see combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings then Usage. If they reach a limit, they can wait for a reset, upgrade the plan, or buy credits. Codex will keep serving developers through its independent section of the desktop app.
OpenAI will begin testing the unified interface with a limited group in the coming weeks. The company has not announced a public release date. It will use test feedback to make adjustments before expanding the trial.
