OpenAI announced plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc. Pierre is the developer behind Code Storage and a suite of open-source tools. Its libraries are already used inside the Codex application.

What Pierre provides

Pierre created the Trees and Diffs libraries. Codex users rely on Trees to explore files and Diffs to inspect changes. The company also built Code Storage, a service that stores code and tracks its history with Git.

Scaling Git work

OpenAI uses an internal version-control backend called Pando to scale Git. More engineering work is happening in parallel. The company wants to update version control for teams and coding agents.

Open source and customers

Pierre's open-source projects will stay open source. OpenAI will continue contributing to those projects. Code Storage customers can keep using the service after the acquisition closes.

The acquisition remains subject to customary regulatory approvals. Until those approvals are secured, OpenAI and Pierre will operate as separate companies. After closing, OpenAI plans to integrate Code Storage features into Codex.
