OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a California-based startup developing AI-powered imaging technology for smartphones, in a transaction valued at more than $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. Neither OpenAI nor Glass Imaging has publicly confirmed the acquisition, leaving the reported purchase price and transaction details unverified by the companies. The deal would add specialized computational photography expertise to OpenAI as it expands beyond software and explores a broader range of consumer hardware products.
Glass Imaging Brings AI to Camera Processing
Founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, Glass Imaging develops technology designed to improve image quality from compact camera systems. Its GlassAI platform uses neural networks trained for individual combinations of lenses and image sensors, allowing the software to account for the specific optical characteristics and limitations of each camera module. Rather than relying primarily on generative editing after a photograph is captured, the system processes raw sensor information to improve detail, noise reduction, color reconstruction, sharpening, and image fusion.
Technology Targets Small Camera Sensors
Glass Imaging has positioned its technology as a way to overcome the physical constraints that limit smartphone cameras and other compact imaging devices. Each neural network can be optimized around factors such as a camera's point spread function, sensor response, and noise characteristics, enabling processing tailored to the hardware on which it operates. The company has also explored potential applications beyond smartphones, including wearables, drones, and other devices where small lenses and sensors can restrict image quality.
From Apple Expertise to Commercial Deployment
Attar and Bishop previously worked at Apple on computational photography technologies associated with the development of Portrait Mode, experience that became central to Glass Imaging's approach. Attar had joined Apple following its 2015 acquisition of Israeli camera technology company LinX Imaging, while Bishop later became Glass Imaging's chief technology officer. Glass Imaging's technology reached commercial smartphones in 2026, including deployment on Honor devices, while the company has also demonstrated raw video processing running on Qualcomm chipsets.
Acquisition Fits OpenAI's Hardware Expansion
The reported acquisition arrives as OpenAI increases its investment in consumer hardware and recruits expertise from established device makers. In May 2025, OpenAI announced a $6.5 billion transaction involving io, the hardware company created by former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his collaborators, bringing Ive's team more closely into OpenAI's product development efforts. Subsequent reporting has linked OpenAI to several possible device concepts, including screenless AI hardware, smartphones, earbuds, and other products built around AI assistants rather than conventional application interfaces.
Glass Imaging Had Raised Nearly $30 Million
Before the reported sale, Glass Imaging had raised approximately $29 million from investors to develop and commercialize its imaging technology. The company announced a $9.3 million extended seed round led by GV in 2024, followed by a $20 million Series A led by Insight Partners in May 2025. That funding supported further development of GlassAI and the company's efforts to bring neural image processing into mass-market consumer devices.
Strategic Value for OpenAI
Glass Imaging could provide OpenAI with technology relevant to devices that depend on cameras as a primary source of environmental information. Advanced imaging systems could support AI products that interpret a user's surroundings, recognize objects, understand visual context, or interact with physical environments through multimodal models. The startup's experience optimizing machine learning directly around camera hardware could therefore complement OpenAI's software capabilities as it works toward tighter integration between artificial intelligence, sensors, and dedicated consumer devices.
If confirmed, the acquisition of Glass Imaging would mark another step in OpenAI's expansion from generative AI software into hardware, imaging, and consumer product development.
