Isar Aerospace Becomes First European Commercial Space Company to Reach Orbit

The second Spectrum flight lifted off from Andøya, Norway and deployed payloads into orbit

Isar Aerospace has become the first commercial space company from Europe to successfully deliver satellites into orbit, achieving the feat on only its second flight. The mission, named Onward and Upward, lifted off from the company's dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space in Norway at 10:12 pm CEST on 5 September 2026. The successful deployment of payloads in orbit signals a major shift in the continent's independent access to space.


A Milestone for European Spaceflight

Company CEO and Co-Founder Daniel Metzler described the launch as the opening of space from Continental Europe and a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers. He noted that the team achieved within a few years what had previously taken the European space industry decades to accomplish. The result provides Europe with sovereign access to space and marks the beginning of a new chapter for European spaceflight.

Technical Achievements During the Flight

The qualification flight successfully passed through MaxQ and completed main engine cutoff and stage separation before the second stage ignited as planned. The vehicle crossed the Kármán line at an altitude of 100 kilometers and jettisoned the payload fairing before reaching orbital velocity. After the circularization burn, spacecraft separation was completed successfully, confirming Isar Aerospace's orbital launch capability.

Payloads Selected Through a National Program

The mission's payloads were chosen through the Microlauncher Competition of the German Space Agency at DLR, which offers educational institutions and start-ups low-cost access to space. This initiative is funded through ESA Boost!, expanding opportunities for smaller organizations to test technologies in orbit. The arrangement underlines the growing role of European institutions in supporting competitive and accessible launch services.

Expanding Infrastructure and Production Capacity

Alongside proving orbital launch capability, Isar Aerospace has advanced a global network of available launch sites and is nearing completion of Europe's largest integrated production facility for launch vehicles. In addition to Andøya, the company is constructing a launch complex in Nova Scotia, Canada, to serve mid- to high-inclination orbits critical for Earth observation and communications. Spectrum launch vehicles three through seven are already in production within a vertically integrated manufacturing model designed for scalability.

Strategic Significance for Europe

Industry observers view the event as a historic turning point for the global space industry and for Europe's strategic, economic, and technological future. Customers around the world now have a sovereign launch option at their disposal, reducing dependence on launch providers outside the continent. The mission establishes a true competitive alternative for both commercial and institutional clients.

The launch addresses what company leadership identifies as the largest bottleneck for the global space industry: launch availability. By offering a reliable European launch service, Isar Aerospace aims to serve a broad range of commercial and institutional customers. This development is expected to strengthen Europe's position in the international space market and accelerate innovation across the sector.


Isar Aerospace now turns its attention to rapidly scaling launch vehicle production, fulfilling its order pipeline, and meeting surging global demand. With a new 40,000 square meter production facility, the company plans to manufacture up to 40 launch vehicles per year once full capacity is reached. The successful Onward and Upward mission positions Isar Aerospace as a central player in the next era of European and global spaceflight.
