OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) have announced a joint programme to help Ukrainian news publishers build practical artificial intelligence capabilities. The initiative arrives during continued conflict and unrest, when independent journalism faces severe operational and financial strain on multiple fronts. It aims to accelerate innovation in ways that strengthen the sustainability, efficiency, and resilience of news organisations across the country, while protecting the availability of trusted information.

A Two Track Programme

The initiative has two complementary components. Newsroom AI will support news organisations selected by AIRPPU in developing and implementing AI-driven editorial projects, while Business Transformation will focus on commercial and operational innovation. These tracks are designed to address both journalistic workflows and the business foundations that independent publishers need for long-term viability and audience relevance.

Masterclasses and Practical Catalyst

The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series builds on previous WAN-IFRA and OpenAI initiatives and brings together international experts and practitioners to share practical knowledge and case studies. Sessions cover editorial workflows, audience engagement, product development, revenue generation, organisational change, and responsible AI adoption. This educational layer prepares participants for the more intensive work that follows and establishes shared understanding across newsrooms.

Hands On Support for Newsrooms

Building on the masterclasses, the Newsroom AI Catalyst will provide deeper hands-on support to ten participating Ukrainian news organisations. These newsrooms will identify high-impact use cases, develop implementation roadmaps, and pilot AI-enabled solutions tailored to their specific editorial and operational needs. The approach is intended to move participants from theory into applied practice with measurable outcomes.

Resources and Timeline

All organisations taking part in the programme will receive credits to OpenAI's API, allowing them to build custom newsroom tools and test new applications. The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series began on August 5, 2026, and the Newsroom AI Catalyst is scheduled to launch on September 17, 2026. Additional information about participation and full programme dates is available from the organisers and through the programme's official channels.

Supporting Independent Journalism

This collaboration responds to the exceptional pressures facing independent regional and local publishers in Ukraine. AIRPPU, the largest network of independent regional press publishers in the country, supports media sustainability, professional journalism, and press freedom through capacity building, emergency support, and innovation initiatives. The programme connects that local mission with international technical and educational resources, giving newsrooms access to expertise that would otherwise be difficult to secure.

Global Expertise and Local Impact

The effort builds on WAN-IFRA's global work supporting AI adoption in news organisations, including leadership programmes, industry research, peer learning communities, and practical implementation initiatives. It also extends OpenAI's ongoing partnerships with news organisations around the world to help support their vital public interest missions. Together, the partners aim to help Ukrainian publishers protect their essential role in civic life while modernising their operations for a more sustainable future.

The new programme offers a practical pathway for Ukrainian news organisations to strengthen their editorial and commercial resilience through artificial intelligence. It combines training, tailored guidance, and technical resources in a coordinated effort that reflects the urgency of the moment. The partnership ultimately represents a shared commitment to sustaining trusted journalism under extraordinary circumstances and to reinforcing the media sector's long-term independence.
