Warburg Pincus, the pioneer of private equity global growth investing, announced on 8 September 2026 that James von Moltke has joined the firm as a senior advisor and Executive-in-Residence. He assumes the role with immediate effect and will support the firm's European activities, with a particular focus on the financial and technology sectors. His responsibilities include supporting the identification and evaluation of new investment opportunities and contributing to value creation across the existing European portfolio.

European Focus and Immediate Mandate

In this newly created capacity, von Moltke will apply his operating experience directly to Warburg Pincus's activities in Europe. His primary focus will be the financial services and technology industries, where structural change is opening new avenues for private equity investment. Beyond sourcing opportunities, he is expected to work closely with portfolio company management teams to strengthen performance and support long-term growth.

Three Decades in Global Financial Leadership

James von Moltke brings more than three decades of leadership experience in global financial services to Warburg Pincus. He served as President of Deutsche Bank AG from 2022 and as Chief Financial Officer and Member of the Management Board for nine years. During that period, he played a key role in driving the bank's transformation and in articulating and executing the Global Hausbank strategy.

Von Moltke also played a lead role in the 2018 initial public offering of Deutsche Bank's asset management affiliate, DWS Group, and held responsibility for Asset Management from 2023. Before joining Deutsche Bank, he was Treasurer of Citigroup, managing capital, funding, liquidity and interest rate risk. Earlier in his career, he led Morgan Stanley's Financial Technology Advisory team globally and spent ten years at J.P. Morgan after three years at Credit Suisse First Boston.

Executive and Firm Perspectives

Andrew Sibbald, Managing Director and Head of Europe at Warburg Pincus, described von Moltke as a seasoned operator with a career spanning more than three decades at the top of global financial services. He noted that von Moltke helped lead Deutsche Bank through one of the most consequential transformations in its history while building deep credibility with regulators across the globe. Sibbald added that his combination of operating judgment, regulatory credibility and market relationships would be invaluable in sourcing new opportunities and building portfolio value.

Von Moltke said he is excited to bring his experience to Warburg Pincus and its portfolio companies as the sector navigates a period of significant structural change. He highlighted his long admiration for the firm's partnership approach, which he observed firsthand during the Primerica IPO. That transaction involved close collaboration with management and the selling shareholder to deliver a value-enhancing deal.

Broader Advisory and Board Experience

Throughout his career, von Moltke has held numerous advisory and non-executive positions. He served as Chairman of the Deposit Insurance Committee of the Association of German Banks and Vice-Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Prüfungsverband Deutscher Banken. He also represented Deutsche Bank on the boards of the Deutsches Aktieninstitut, Schmalenbach Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft, Atlantik-Brücke and the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany.

The appointment signals Warburg Pincus's intent to deepen its European investing capabilities by pairing investment expertise with senior operational leadership. Von Moltke's background in banking, capital markets and financial transformation aligns with the firm's focus on navigating complexity in regulated industries. His immediate start and broad mandate suggest that Warburg Pincus sees his experience as directly relevant to current opportunities and portfolio needs across the region.
