Rapido has integrated Ownly, its food delivery service, into its main consumer application, allowing users in Bengaluru to order meals from the same platform they use to book bike taxis, autorickshaws, and cabs. The move brings Ownly beyond its standalone app and gives the service direct access to Rapido’s existing base of monthly active users. It also marks a broader expansion of Rapido’s multi-service strategy as the mobility company seeks to strengthen its position in India’s competitive consumer internet market.
A Unified Consumer Platform
With the integration, food delivery now sits alongside Rapido’s mobility, parcel delivery, and other consumer services within a single application. The company operates in more than 400 cities and facilitates over five million rides each day, although Ownly remains available only in Bengaluru at this stage. By placing food ordering inside a widely used mobility app, Rapido aims to reduce the friction of acquiring customers and encourage existing users to try an additional service without downloading a separate platform.
A Different Restaurant Model
Ownly has positioned itself as an alternative to commission-based food delivery marketplaces by using a zero-commission structure for restaurant partners. Rather than taking a percentage from every order, the platform charges participating restaurants a subscription fee, a model designed to help merchants retain more revenue and offer customers clearer pricing. The service has already partnered with nearly 20,000 restaurants, giving Rapido a substantial supply base as it works to increase adoption through the main app.
Using Rapido’s Logistics Network
The integration is also intended to improve delivery economics by relying on Rapido’s existing rider network instead of building a separate logistics operation. Rapido said this structure can lower delivery costs while increasing rider utilization during periods when demand for passenger trips is weaker. The company believes those efficiencies could make food delivery more sustainable without requiring restaurants to absorb higher platform charges or customers to face additional hidden fees.
Expanding the Addressable Market
Rapido sees an opportunity to reach consumers who regularly use ride-hailing services but have not yet adopted online food ordering. According to the company, India’s ride-hailing user base is nearly twice the size of the country’s online food delivery user base, creating a potential channel for expanding the category. The strategy comes as India’s online food delivery market is projected by Jefferies to grow from an estimated $9 billion in 2024–25 to nearly $25 billion by 2029–30.
Competitive Implications
The integration places Rapido more directly against established food delivery platforms while differentiating Ownly through restaurant subscriptions and shared logistics. Aravind Sanka, co-founder of Rapido and Ownly, said the service was created to address structural challenges in food delivery by improving outcomes for restaurants without weakening the customer experience. Its success will depend on whether Rapido can convert mobility users into frequent food-ordering customers while maintaining reliable deliveries, competitive restaurant selection, and sustainable unit economics.
Bringing Ownly into Rapido’s main app represents a significant step in the company’s effort to build a broader consumer services platform around its mobility network. The decision gives Ownly greater visibility, offers restaurants access to a larger customer pool, and creates another use case for Rapido’s rider base during off-peak hours. Although the service is currently limited to Bengaluru, its performance there could determine whether Rapido expands the model to additional Indian cities and becomes a more significant challenger in food delivery.
