Opentrons, a laboratory automation company, has raised $40 million in Series E funding. Healthcare investor Avego led the round. BroadOak Capital Partners also joined the financing.
Funding plans
The company will use the capital to scale its robotics, software, and data infrastructure tools. It plans to invest in AI-driven experimental execution. Existing backers include SoftBank Vision Fund and Khosla Ventures.
Company footprint
Opentrons is based in New York City and was founded in 2014. It has deployed more than 11,000 robots to laboratories in over 80 countries. Its systems are used at 90% of the top 20 global pharmaceutical companies.
How the platform works
The Opentrons Flex platform combines robots and AI systems. Scientists use it to design, run, and improve experiments in a continuous loop. The open, API-driven robots are built to let AI run experiments directly.
The funding will support faster protocol development through the company's software and AI. Opentrons also plans to expand into new markets and geographies. It will pursue deeper integration with the broader lab automation ecosystem.
