NewOrbit Secures $18.5 Million Series A for VLEO Satellites

The funding, led by Voyager Ventures, will help the UK startup build its VLEO satellite constellation.

NewOrbit, a UK-based space technology firm, has secured $18.5 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round. Led by Voyager Ventures, the investment will accelerate the company's mission to commercialize Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), a previously inaccessible region. This capital injection marks a significant step towards unlocking new capabilities for satellite-based services.


Pioneering the Final Frontier of Orbit

Very Low Earth Orbit exists in the atmospheric layer between 200 and 300 kilometers, above air traffic but below conventional satellites. For decades, this region was deemed too hostile for commercial use due to intense aerodynamic drag and corrosive atomic oxygen. These challenges have effectively rendered VLEO the last empty frontier in near-Earth space.

NewOrbit has engineered a solution to these obstacles with its purpose-built NEO-1 satellite. The spacecraft features a proprietary propulsion system designed to counteract orbital decay and withstand the harsh conditions for up to five years. CEO Anatolii Papulov called the region "the most valuable empty real estate in space."

Transformative Applications from a Lower Altitude

The strategic advantage of operating in VLEO is rooted in proximity, as flying closer to Earth enhances performance and cost-efficiency. This lower altitude significantly improves earth observation resolution and strengthens communication signals. NewOrbit's approach promises to deliver capabilities that are fundamentally new rather than just incremental improvements.

From this unique vantage point, the company plans to offer drone-quality imagery at a fraction of current costs. It also aims to provide direct 5G connectivity to standard mobile phones without needing special antennas or amplifiers. Furthermore, NewOrbit will enable novel applications like space-based LiDAR and live high-definition video streaming.

Strengthening Leadership and Strategic Vision

To guide its ambitious strategy, NewOrbit has appointed Jean-Jacques Dordain, former Director General of the European Space Agency, to its board. His extensive experience provides invaluable institutional credibility as the company navigates this new commercial category. Dordain's involvement underscores the mission's significance within the European space ecosystem.

Dordain joins a distinguished board that includes Sir Chris Deverell, former Commander of UK Joint Forces. Both leaders highlight the strategic importance of developing sovereign VLEO capabilities, with Dordain calling it a "genuinely new commercial category." Sir Chris expressed pride that this advanced technology is being pioneered in the United Kingdom.

Building Europe's VLEO Hub

The $18.5 million in new capital is earmarked for developing the NEO Production Complex in Reading. This advanced manufacturing facility, set to open in 2027, will serve as the hub for building and integrating NewOrbit's commercial satellite fleet. It represents a major investment in the UK's space infrastructure and technological leadership.

The company's roadmap includes launching its first commercial satellite in 2028, carrying the first customer payloads to this altitude. Production will then scale rapidly from an initial ten satellites per year to a capacity of several per week. At full scale, the facility will be Europe's largest dedicated VLEO manufacturing center.


This successful funding round propels NewOrbit forward in its quest to unlock the immense potential of Very Low Earth Orbit. By overcoming long-standing engineering challenges, the company is not just building a new class of satellites but also establishing a critical layer of future space infrastructure.
