Epitel, a Salt Lake City-based medical technology firm, has successfully raised $26 million in a Series B financing round. The funding, co-led by Catalyst Health Ventures and Genoa Ventures, is earmarked for the commercial expansion of its innovative brain-monitoring technology. This strategic investment aims to make extended electroencephalogram (EEG) testing more accessible to patients outside of traditional hospital environments.

Addressing a Critical Gap in Neurological Care

A significant portion of the U.S. population faces barriers to essential neurological diagnostics, a problem Epitel aims to solve. Approximately 9.2 million Americans experience seizures annually, yet 40% lack access to EEG testing, partly because only 27% of U.S. hospitals possess EEG capabilities. This disparity highlights a critical need for more widespread and accessible monitoring solutions for neurological conditions.

Traditional EEG monitoring methods present considerable limitations, often lasting only 72 hours in a clinical setting. Since seizures can be infrequent and unpredictable, a short recording period may fail to capture any events, delaying a proper diagnosis for months. Furthermore, many seizures do not have visible physical symptoms, making objective brain-activity data essential for accurate assessment.

The REMI System's Innovative Approach

Epitel's REMI Remote EEG Monitoring System offers a modern solution to these long-standing challenges in neurological care. The platform utilizes wireless, wearable sensors that allow patients to monitor their brain activity from the comfort of their own homes. This technology, which has received five FDA 510(k) clearances, enables data collection over several weeks, significantly improving diagnostic potential.

The system is designed for patient convenience while providing clinicians with extensive data for analysis. Its AI-powered component, REMI Vigilenz, automatically analyzes recordings and flags activity that may represent a seizure for expert review. This feature helps physicians more efficiently navigate lengthy recordings, focusing their attention on potentially critical events.

Strategic Allocation of New Funding

The new capital will fuel an aggressive commercial rollout of the REMI system across the United States. Epitel plans to expand its sales, marketing, and customer experience teams to build a dedicated field organization. The funding will also support provider adoption by simplifying the technology's distribution, deployment, and integration into existing clinical workflows.

A primary focus for this expansion is the ambulatory market, which serves patients outside of hospital settings. Epitel's wireless design is particularly beneficial for individuals in remote areas or those who find inpatient testing difficult. The system also offers a less disruptive option for younger patients, reducing the need for extended stays in unfamiliar hospital environments.

Enhancing Clinical Efficiency and Patient Access

The REMI platform is positioned as a powerful tool to support, not replace, neurologists in their diagnostic process. By using AI to highlight potential seizure activity, the system reduces the significant clinical burden associated with reviewing long-duration EEG recordings. This allows clinicians to manage large volumes of neurological data and identify events requiring further evaluation more effectively.

The system's regulatory clearances cover neurological monitoring for patients as young as one year old, with AI-assisted detection available for those aged six and older. Crucially, REMI is reimbursable under existing billing codes, which removes a common barrier to the adoption of new medical devices. This combination of regulatory approval and reimbursement paves the way for broader access and clinical integration.

This $26 million financing round marks a pivotal moment for Epitel and the field of ambulatory neurological monitoring. By expanding the commercial reach of its REMI system, the company is poised to address a major gap in seizure diagnosis and care. Ultimately, this investment will help establish extended wireless EEG monitoring as a more widely available and patient-friendly standard, improving outcomes for millions.
