Angel Ventures, a Mexican venture capital firm, has expanded its strategy with the launch of Apex Company Lab, a new business vertical focused on developing and operating its own companies. The unit will create businesses from the ground up and may also acquire traditional companies with strong growth potential. Its first operating company is Bark & Co, a Dog Wellness Club based in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Venture Capital

Apex Company Lab forms part of AltCore, Angel Ventures’ investment program combining three asset classes that operate in parallel. These include private business credit through Aura, traditional businesses through Apex Company Lab, and venture capital. The structure is intended to provide complementary investment opportunities while broadening the firm’s activities beyond its established venture capital model.

Angel Ventures said the expansion will not replace its existing focus on startups. The firm plans to continue investing in emerging companies while developing additional investment strategies for its investors. Apex Company Lab therefore adds company creation and business transformation to Angel Ventures’ existing investment activities.

A Strategy Forged from Experience

The decision to establish Apex Company Lab reflects Angel Ventures’ 17 years of experience working with entrepreneurs and supporting the development of companies. Hernán Fernández, Managing Partner at Angel Ventures, said the firm has gained direct insight into the decisions that accelerate growth, the mistakes that limit scalability, and the signals that reveal opportunities before they become widely recognized. That experience has informed the operating and investment methodology that will be applied through the new vertical.

Angel Ventures identified a broad segment of profitable traditional businesses that struggle to expand because they lack strategic capital, professional processes, or adequate technology infrastructure. Apex Company Lab intends to address these limitations by combining capital with technology, operational expertise, and a proprietary scaling methodology. The firm will apply lessons learned from nearly two decades of venture investing to businesses operating in established industries.

Inaugural Venture in the Pet Wellness Market

The first company developed under the Apex Company Lab model is Bark & Co, a premium Dog Wellness Club that has opened in San Pedro Garza García. The concept combines emotional well-being, technology, and an integrated service experience for dogs and their families. Its services include boarding, enriched daycare, professional training, grooming, and spa treatments.

José Mario Guillé, Partner at Angel Ventures and the executive leading Apex Company Lab, said the decision to enter the pet market is supported by a defined investment thesis. The firm believes the category remains underestimated despite rapidly changing consumer behavior and growing demand for specialized pet services. Angel Ventures cited data indicating that Mexico has a large dog-owning population and one of the world’s highest levels of household dog penetration.

The firm also sees a broader shift in how families approach pet care. Guillé said owners increasingly recognize that dogs require physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being rather than basic care alone. This change is driving demand for premium products, specialized nutrition, preventive medicine, professional training, higher-quality grooming, and services centered on comprehensive wellness.

Consolidating a Fragmented Market

Bark & Co has been designed to bring several premium dog services together under a single brand, operating standard, and wellness philosophy. Its facilities use open, cage-free spaces and follow positive-reinforcement practices intended to reduce stress and fear. The model focuses on understanding canine behavior, respecting each dog’s individual needs, and avoiding methods based on intimidation or punishment.

Angel Ventures’ market analysis found that services such as boarding, daycare, training, grooming, nutrition, and veterinary care are still frequently offered by separate providers. Bark & Co seeks to address this fragmentation by delivering a more consistent and integrated customer experience. The firm believes the market will increasingly favor providers capable of combining these services under a trusted brand.

According to figures cited by Angel Ventures from International Market Analysis Research and Consulting Group, Mexico’s pet market represents an estimated opportunity of between US$5.4 billion and US$8.3 billion. The specialized services segment, including boarding, daycare, grooming, training, and wellness, is estimated at between US$1.5 billion and US$2.5 billion. Bark & Co is not positioned as a traditional veterinary business, but as part of an emerging category of wellness clubs for dogs.

A Broader Company-Building Strategy

Bark & Co represents the first step in a wider company-building strategy for Angel Ventures. The firm is already evaluating opportunities in industries characterized by resilient demand, attractive cash flows, and clear potential for technological and operational improvement. Future companies may be developed internally or created through the acquisition and transformation of existing businesses.

Apex Company Lab will also allow new investors to participate directly in companies developed through the vertical. According to the firm, investors may participate through preferred equity structures that include corporate governance provisions, profit-distribution mechanisms, and liquidity options established from the outset. This approach is intended to give investors exposure to individual operating companies rather than only to a diversified venture capital portfolio.

The launch of Apex Company Lab expands Angel Ventures’ role beyond identifying and financing promising businesses. The firm will continue investing in startups while also creating, acquiring, operating, and scaling companies directly. Through Bark & Co and future ventures, Angel Ventures aims to apply its investment and operating experience to traditional industries with significant growth potential.
