A significant portion of the global population, approximately 38% or three billion people, resides in areas with mobile internet coverage but remains offline. This usage gap is attributed to several barriers, including limited digital literacy and skills, a lack of relevant content, online safety concerns, and insufficient access. Furthermore, inconsistent access to reliable electricity in many markets hinders device charging, restricting online access and other energy-dependent economic activities. Handset affordability is also frequently cited as a primary obstacle preventing individuals from connecting to the internet.
Program Focus Areas
The GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile is seeking applications for solutions in the following areas:
• Digital solutions that enhance access to clean, reliable energy, especially in underserved regions. The objective is to strengthen energy systems to broaden participation in the digital economy and promote digital inclusion. Examples include productive-use energy solutions, smart metering, energy efficiency solutions, small-scale mini-grid or mesh-grid models, and other renewable energy solutions.
• Solutions that promote device circularity, decrease value-chain emissions, and increase handset affordability. These models should focus on extending device longevity and facilitating responsible e-waste collection and recycling.
Application Information
• Application Deadline: Applications will close on 6 April 2026 at 23:59 GMT.
• Updates: Interested parties can stay informed by joining the program's email list.
This initiative aims to support innovative solutions that address critical barriers to mobile internet adoption by focusing on the intersection of green technology and digital inclusion, specifically targeting energy access and device affordability.
