Blueprint by The Engine is a program designed to assist graduate students, postdocs, researchers, and their teams in exploring the translational potential of their breakthrough research and innovations. It equips the next generation of Tough Tech leaders with foundational knowledge and insights from experienced founders. Participants gain tools to conduct self-diligence, de-risk their ideas, and chart a clear path for their entrepreneurial journey. The program focuses on developing key entrepreneurial skills and building a pitch deck, providing access to a robust network of founders, investors, and program leads.


Program Details

• Program Focus: Designed for technologists who have been developing a Tough Tech innovation for over six months and plan to pursue it full-time as a startup within the next 12-18 months.
• Cohorts: Two cohorts are offered annually, in the Fall and Spring.
• Spring 2026 Dates: The program runs from April 3rd to May 20th.
• Format: The 8-week program is primarily virtual, concluding with an in-person showcase event.
• Cost: There is no cost to participate in the program.
• Equity: The Engine does not take an equity stake or form a business relationship with participants during the program.
• Intellectual Property: Any IP developed by participants through their research remains their own.

Program Structure and Time Commitment

• Total Commitment: Participants are expected to dedicate approximately 20 hours in total to workshops, mentorship sessions, and program activities.
• Facilitated Core Sessions: Seven facilitated workshops are held on Fridays from April 3rd to May 15th, covering key entrepreneurial concepts.
• Midweek Engagement: The program includes fireside chats with guest speakers on Tuesdays and networking events with fellow cohort members on Wednesdays.
• Mentorship: Participants receive personalized guidance through expert office hours and are assigned to dedicated mentor groups.
• The Blueprint Showcase: The program culminates on May 20th with an in-person showcase at The Engine HQ, 750 Main Street, Cambridge, MA, where participants present their work to the Tough Tech ecosystem.

Curriculum Focus

The curriculum is structured around nine critical learning areas essential for building a successful Tough Tech startup:
• Intellectual Property: Understanding how to begin the IP process and create a legal moat.
• Leadership: Developing the CEO role, understanding leadership styles, and guiding a team.
• Tech Development & Product Roadmap: Building a strategic, milestone-driven technology roadmap.
• Communications: Mastering the art of conveying a founder narrative to diverse stakeholders.
• Team Building: Attracting founding members and creating a scalable, human-first team.
• Board Management: Leveraging a board effectively for strategy, governance, and oversight.
• Business Strategy: Developing financing and business strategies aligned with technology and human capital.
• Government Relations: Navigating engagement with government agencies for technology deployment.
• Network Development: Connecting with stakeholders in the Tough Tech innovation ecosystem.

Eligibility Criteria

• Eligible Applicants: The program welcomes applications from graduate students (Masters or PhD), postdocs, and research scientists affiliated with universities or national labs, as well as early-stage founders engaged in commercializing Tough Tech solutions.
• Geographic Scope: Applications are encouraged from across the U.S. and Canada. International researchers with compelling cases should contact the program directly.
• Undergraduate Students: While primarily for graduate students and above, undergraduates with compelling cases are advised to contact the program to discuss their situation.
• Team Structure: Applications are accepted from both individuals and teams. Teams may include up to five participants, with at least one representative required to be present at each weekly session.
• Company Status: Applicants are not required to have an incorporated company, customers, revenue, or traction. The program is designed for those at the R&D and early exploration stage.
• Visa Sponsorship: The program does not sponsor visas but can direct participants to resources for navigating visa options independently.

Application Process

• Application Deadline: Applications for the Spring 2026 cohort close on Friday, March 13, at 11:59 pm ET.
• Selection Criteria: Selection is based on the merit and potential impact of the technological breakthrough, the team’s commitment, and the potential for real-world application.
• Confidentiality: All application materials are kept confidential and are reviewed only by The Engine's selection committee.
• Reapplication: Applicants not selected for a cohort are welcome to reapply for future cohorts.
• Scheduling Conflicts: Applicants with anticipated scheduling conflicts should note them in their application, as deferral to a later cohort may be possible.
• Information Sharing: By submitting an application, applicants consent to their contact and high-level application information being shared with select groups to provide funding opportunities and related resources.
