The Exploration Company (TEC), a European space company scaling globally, has announced a $450 million Series C financing round. The round is co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners, Atomico, and the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT, with participation from existing European backers. It is the largest Series C disclosed by a European space company and the largest funding round secured by an EU-headquartered company led by a female founder and chief executive.
Advancing the Nyx Capsule and Storm Engine
The Nyx capsule remains the company's immediate priority and the foundation of its reusable space transportation platform. Nyx is designed to carry cargo to current and future space stations and return it safely to Earth, with growth potential to carry crew at a later stage. Its first full-scale orbital demonstration will include docking with the International Space Station and returning safely to Earth.
A New Propulsion Capability for Europe
The financing will also accelerate development of Storm, a reusable high-thrust rocket engine powered by liquid oxygen and biomethane. Storm is based on a full-flow staged-combustion cycle and is designed to deliver efficiency and thrust currently unmatched in Europe. It will provide the propulsion foundation for a future reusable European super-heavy launcher capable of placing up to 40 tons into low Earth orbit in reusable configuration.
Backing from European Leaders
Founder and CEO Hélène Huby said the capital will allow the company to execute with urgency on Nyx and Storm while scaling from Europe with global talent and partners. French President Emmanuel Macron described the round as transformational and an inspiration for European space companies. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen added that the financing shows what Europe can achieve when talent, ambition and innovation are matched with capital.
Investor Confidence and Governance
Bessemer Venture Partners partner Alex Ferrara will join the TEC board of directors as part of the financing. He noted that space sovereignty is increasingly critical for Europe and praised the team for executing on difficult engineering challenges. Atomico managing partner Laura Connell and EQT partner Ted Persson also emphasized the company's speed, ambition, and commercial momentum.
Commercial Traction and Institutional Partnerships
TEC has won more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments globally, balanced between public-sector programs and private-sector customers. These include the European Space Agency and commercial space station cargo logistics agreements. The company was also the first European space startup to sign a Space Act Agreement with NASA, working on technical and safety qualification activities supporting future missions.
Market Demand and Strategic Rationale
Space infrastructure already underpins communications, scientific research, security, and critical services on Earth. Demand for space-station logistics, in-orbit services, and resilient infrastructure is accelerating even as the ability to reach, supply, and return from orbit remains concentrated and fragile. TEC is addressing these constraints by building reusable transportation systems for public agencies and commercial operators.
Capital Deployment and Workforce Expansion
The Series C brings TEC's total secured funding to approximately $680 million. Subject to regulatory approvals, the financing will support hiring and industrial scale-up across engineering, manufacturing, mission operations, propulsion, and program delivery. TEC currently employs more than 550 people across Europe, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.
With the new capital, TEC is positioned to demonstrate reusable orbital transportation and advance propulsion technology that could reshape European space access.
