Nigerian defence-technology firm Terra Industries has appointed Nnamdi Chife as its new Vice President of Military Relations. This strategic move aims to fortify the company's leadership as it deepens its collaboration with Nigeria’s armed forces. The appointment underscores Terra's commitment to enhancing the nation's sovereign defence capabilities through advanced technology.
A Strategic Move to Deepen Military Ties
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment, following a February memorandum of understanding with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). This agreement establishes a joint venture for local assembly and research in drones, robotics, and cybersecurity systems. Chife's leadership is now central to navigating this integration into Nigeria's formal defence manufacturing structure.
In his new capacity, Chife will spearhead Terra’s military engagement strategy and offer crucial advisory input to the CEO and board. His primary objective is to guide the development of smart weapons systems for the Nigerian armed forces and other African militaries. This role is critical as the company shifts from product development to executing major military contracts.
An Experienced Hand in Defence and Security
Nnamdi Chife brings a wealth of experience to the role, holding a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies and over 15 years of experience in the Nigerian defense sector. He is a counter-insurgency specialist who has previously led multiple Nigerian military delegations for global weapons acquisitions. This is his second tenure with the company, having previously served on its board in 2023.
Before rejoining Terra, Chife founded Chive GPS, a security intelligence firm specializing in conflict resolution and asset tracing. His firm has collaborated with key law enforcement bodies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This background, combined with nearly a decade in finance at Ecobank, gives him a unique perspective on security challenges.
Terra's Vision for Sovereign Defence
Founded in 2023 by CEO Nathan Nwachuku and co-founder Maxwell Maduka, Terra Industries has quickly become a major player. The startup has successfully raised $34 million from a mix of US and local investors, including 8VC and Lux Capital. This funding makes it one of Africa's most well-capitalized defence-technology companies.
The company is positioning itself as a vital local supplier to Nigeria’s military, addressing the growing demand for homegrown defence solutions. This strategy directly supports the government's objective to reduce reliance on foreign military hardware amid rising insecurity. Terra specializes in creating sophisticated drones and automated surveillance systems tailored for counterterrorism operations.
Nnamdi Chife's appointment as Vice President of Military Relations marks a significant milestone for Terra Industries. His extensive expertise is expected to accelerate the company's mission to build a robust sovereign defence-industrial base. This strategic leadership addition solidifies Terra's position as a key partner in modernizing Nigeria's military capabilities.
