Fintech firm Remi has secured approximately $135,000 in funding from the Stellar Community Fund to pioneer a new confidential settlement layer. This project is designed for regulated financial institutions seeking to leverage blockchain technology without compromising on privacy or compliance. The initiative aims to resolve a critical challenge that has limited blockchain adoption in mainstream finance.
Addressing a Critical Industry Gap
The inherent transparency of public blockchains presents a significant obstacle for regulated financial entities like banks and payment providers. Broadcasting client transactions and balances to competitors and the public is a non-starter for these institutions. This has largely confined them to traditional correspondent banking systems, which are often slow and expensive.
Innovating with Confidentiality and Compliance
Remi's solution introduces a settlement layer that keeps transaction amounts and account balances encrypted on-chain. It utilizes zero-knowledge proofs to validate transfers, confirming their mathematical accuracy without revealing the underlying values. This approach effectively provides robust privacy while maintaining the integrity of the public ledger.
To ensure regulatory oversight, the system mandates that new accounts escrow a viewing key accessible only to authorized auditors. This design enables selective disclosure, allowing a regulator to inspect a single transaction without exposing an account's full history. Compliance is therefore embedded into the protocol itself rather than being an afterthought.
Leveraging the Stellar Network
The decision to build on Stellar was driven by the network's specific focus on payments and cross-border transfers. Stellar offers fast settlement, low transaction costs, and native support for currency-to-currency movement. Its established ecosystem of anchors and liquidity provides a ready-made foundation for Remi's infrastructure to connect with local currencies.
A key aspect of the project is its design to shield institutions from direct interaction with cryptocurrency. Remi is developing sponsored network fees, which means the underlying crypto-asset transactions are handled behind the scenes. This allows banks and payment providers to use the infrastructure without needing to hold or manage digital assets.
Fostering Ecosystem Growth and Future Plans
The grant will fund the development of open-source tools to benefit the entire Stellar ecosystem. These resources will include operational dashboards, a sponsored-transaction relayer, and a client software development kit. By providing these tools, Remi aims to lower the barrier for other regulated operators to build on the network.
According to Remi's Co-Founder and CEO, A. Tony Amer, this project directly addresses the market's need for a solution that does not force a choice between privacy and compliance. The company is now advancing the system from testnet to mainnet deployment. This will be accompanied by the development of essential compliance tools for institutional operations teams.
The backing from the Stellar Community Fund positions Remi to make a substantial impact on the financial technology landscape. By creating a practical and compliant solution for confidential settlements, the project could accelerate the adoption of blockchain by traditional financial players. This development marks a crucial step in bridging the gap between decentralized innovation and regulated finance.
