Moniepoint, a leading Nigerian fintech unicorn, has announced the discontinuation of its UK-based remittance service, MonieWorld. The decision comes less than two years after its launch and signals a major strategic shift for the company. Moniepoint will now redirect its resources to strengthen its core operations across the African continent.

A Strategic Pivot from European Expansion

MonieWorld was launched in April 2025 to serve the Nigerian diaspora and capture a share of the substantial UK-Nigeria remittance market. The venture was backed by significant investment, including the acquisition of Bancom Europe Ltd to secure regulatory approval. This move was initially seen as the first step in a broader international expansion plan for the fintech giant.

The company committed substantial capital to this European venture, with regulatory filings showing $7.39 million was earmarked for the London expansion. This included £1.2 million in initial setup costs and a $2.5 million equity deposit for the Bancom acquisition. These figures underscore the seriousness of Moniepoint's initial commitment to the UK market.

Despite the decision to cease operations, Moniepoint reported positive user engagement metrics for MonieWorld. The company noted a 70% increase in monthly transaction volume from users utilizing cards and digital wallets. However, specific figures on total customers or overall transaction value were not disclosed by the company.

Doubling Down on African Markets

The shutdown is part of a deliberate strategy to refocus on markets where Moniepoint already has significant scale and momentum. The company is reallocating the technical, capital, and operational infrastructure developed for MonieWorld to its primary African operations. This pivot aims to consolidate its leadership position in its most promising regions.

Moniepoint's dominance in its home market of Nigeria provides a strong foundation for this renewed focus. The platform processed an impressive $294 billion in annualized transactions in 2025, demonstrating its deep market penetration. This success justifies the decision to concentrate resources on further growth within Nigeria.

Beyond Nigeria, Moniepoint is actively pursuing growth in other key African economies, notably Kenya. The company recently finalized the acquisition of a 78% majority stake in Kenya’s Sumac Microfinance Bank. This strategic investment provides a solid regulatory and operational foothold in the vital East African market.

Navigating the Transition

Moniepoint has assured customers that a clear process is in place for the wind-down of MonieWorld. The company will continue to process existing funds and will communicate directly with users regarding timelines and next steps. This ensures a smooth transition for all affected customers during the operational shift.

The company is also managing the impact on its workforce by redeploying most of the MonieWorld team. Affected employees have been informed and will be transitioned into other roles within the broader Moniepoint group. This approach aims to retain talent and expertise within the organization despite the business unit's closure.

Moniepoint's withdrawal from the UK market is not a retreat but a calculated realignment of its strategic priorities. By closing MonieWorld, the company is choosing to concentrate its significant resources on dominating the African fintech landscape. This move underscores a disciplined focus on its core mission of empowering businesses across the continent.
