Setara Biosciences raised US$90 million in Series A funding. The clinical-stage biotechnology company develops precision medicines for rare diseases. It was formed after Jazz Pharmaceuticals acquired Actio Biosciences.

Investor syndicate

The round included Deerfield Management, Canaan, Droia Ventures, EcoR1, Euclidean Capital, and Regeneron Ventures. Jazz Pharmaceuticals joined as a new shareholder through the Actio acquisition. The funding supports the advancement of Actio's remaining pipeline.

Company context

Setara is led by David Goldstein, its co-founder, president and executive chair. Several members of Actio's leadership team also moved to Setara. The company uses genetics to identify targets for severe rare diseases.

Lead program

STAR-0871 is an oral small molecule TRPV4 inhibitor. It is designed for CMT2C and overactive bladder. Setara completed the healthy volunteer portion of a Phase 1 clinical trial.

Setara plans to start a Phase 1b study in CMT2C patients in 2027. It also plans to begin a Phase 2a study in overactive bladder. STAR-0871 has Rare Pediatric Disease, Orphan Drug, and Fast Track designations from the U.S. FDA.
