Science Corporation, founded by former Neuralink president Max Hodak, has announced the European commercial launch of its PRIMA system. This groundbreaking brain-computer interface is the first clinically proven treatment to restore functional vision for patients with geographic atrophy from age-related macular degeneration. The launch marks a significant milestone for the company and the broader field of neurotechnology, offering new hope to millions.


A New Hope for Vision Restoration

Age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness, affecting over five million people globally by destroying central vision. This condition robs individuals of the ability to read, recognize faces, and maintain their independence. PRIMA is the first and only device to receive CE marking for restoring detailed form vision in these patients.

The PRIMA system consists of a tiny, 2x2 millimeter photovoltaic implant and a pair of specialized glasses. During a brief outpatient procedure, the chip is placed under the retina at the back of the eye. The glasses then project near-infrared light onto the implant, which converts the light into electrical signals that stimulate the retina.

On average, patients experienced a visual acuity improvement equivalent to reading five additional lines on an eye chart. The company has secured a CE mark, authorizing PRIMA for commercial use in 30 European countries. In the United States, the device has received both Breakthrough Device and Humanitarian Use Device designations from the FDA, signaling an expedited path toward market entry.

With regulatory approval secured in Europe, the company is now focused on its commercial rollout, beginning in Germany. Science Corporation is actively working with healthcare providers on reimbursement strategies for the device, which is expected to cost several hundred thousand dollars.
