Warsaw-based climate tech startup Rainbow Weather has secured $5.5 million in seed funding for its AI-powered weather intelligence platform. Backed by investors including Flo Health founder Yuri Gurski, the funding will fuel the company's mission to deliver hyper-accurate, short-term forecasts. This positions Rainbow Weather to expand its services for both consumers and enterprise clients in an increasingly volatile climate.

A New Approach to Weather Intelligence

Rainbow Weather's platform distinguishes itself by fusing data from diverse sources, including satellites, radar, and even smartphone barometers. This multi-source approach allows its machine learning models to create a more complete and accurate picture of atmospheric conditions. The company provides forecasts with a spatial resolution down to a single square kilometer by continuously processing this data stream.

The system delivers four-hour precipitation reports that update every ten minutes, a significant improvement over legacy providers. Unlike traditional methods, Rainbow Weather's AI analyzes how weather systems evolve in real time for greater reliability. This focus on "nowcasting" provides precise timing for events like the start and end of rainfall.

From Personal Experience to Technological Innovation

The company was founded in 2021 by serial entrepreneurs Yuriy Melnichek and Alexander Matveenko, who have a history of successful tech ventures. Inspiration struck when Melnichek encountered a sudden hailstorm in the Alps that existing apps failed to predict. This event revealed the limitations of models that did not account for complex geography and its effect on weather.

This incident highlighted a critical market gap for a system that could understand how terrain affects weather patterns in real time. Melnichek and Matveenko set out to build a platform using machine learning to predict how weather phenomena actually develop. Their goal was to create a truly dynamic forecasting tool that moved beyond simple historical movement patterns.

Strategic Expansion and Market Growth

With over one million installs, the company has already demonstrated strong organic growth driven by user satisfaction. The new $5.5 million in capital will be used to significantly enhance the platform's capabilities. Key goals include extending the forecast horizon from four to 24 hours and incorporating a wider range of weather parameters.

A major focus for this expansion is the business-to-business market, projected to reach over $4 billion by 2030. Rainbow Weather is targeting industries where precise weather data is critical, such as aviation, logistics, and agriculture. The company offers its data through APIs, positioning itself as an essential infrastructure layer for weather-dependent sectors.

Championing Transparency in Forecasting

In a move toward industry transparency, Rainbow Weather launched weatherindex.ai, an open-source benchmarking tool. This platform publicly evaluates the accuracy of short-term precipitation forecasts from various major providers in real time. It compares predictions against verified data from airport meteorological stations, offering a clear view of performance across different regions.

This initiative challenges the industry norm, where many providers prohibit direct data comparisons in their licensing agreements. By publishing these results openly, Rainbow Weather advocates for a new standard of accountability in a field where data is critical. The company believes forecasting should be judged by transparent and verifiable metrics, much like AI model development.

Rainbow Weather's recent funding and innovative technology signal a significant shift in meteorological forecasting. By combining advanced AI with a commitment to transparency, the company is building a comprehensive environmental intelligence system. This long-term vision aims to provide crucial, real-time insights to help businesses and individuals navigate the challenges of an increasingly unstable climate.
