Popo Global, a Bengaluru-based restaurant company, has raised Rs 532 crore, approximately 56 million dollars, from Artal Asia. The investment will support the expansion of its gourmet food brands, which include The Pizza Bakery, Paris Panini, and Smash Guys. The fresh capital marks a significant milestone for a company that had largely bootstrapped its growth before this transaction.

Funding and Valuation

Popo Global has not officially disclosed its valuation or the exact size of Artal Asia's stake. However, a person familiar with the transaction said the round valued the company at about Rs 1,250 crore, with Artal Asia holding a significant minority position. The investment highlights strong institutional confidence in the company's operating model and growth potential.

Brand Origins and Portfolio

Popo Global was founded in 2017 by brothers Nikhil Gupta and Abhijit Gupta, also known as AB. The company began with The Pizza Bakery, a gourmet sourdough pizza brand, before expanding into Paris Panini, which offers French-inspired paninis, sandwiches, wraps, and crepes. It later added Smash Guys, a smash burger brand, and currently claims 41 outlets across Bengaluru.

Operating Model and Performance

The company's operating model combines the convenience of quick service restaurants with the customer experience associated with fine dining and the scalability of delivery kitchens. Its strategy focuses on core products, dine-in and delivery channels, standardized processes, and careful restaurant real estate selection. Popo Global said it has recorded strong same-store sales growth, repeat rates, and unit economics, although it did not disclose underlying figures.

Expansion Strategy

With the new investment, Popo Global plans to move beyond Bengaluru and scale its portfolio of food brands across India. The cofounders said that bringing Artal Asia into Popo allows them to think considerably bigger while keeping the spirit that got them there and never cutting corners on quality. They also noted that Artal Asia has partnered with some of the world's most successful food businesses and understands that the product must stay at the centre of it.

Investor Background

Artal Asia is an affiliate of global investment firm Artal Group and is associated with the US-based Invus Group. Its India portfolio includes Capital Foods, which was later acquired by Tata Consumer Products, as well as Burger Singh and Jumbotail. The investor brings substantial experience in backing food and consumer businesses across the region.

Sector Momentum

The transaction comes amid continued investor interest in Indian restaurant and food brands seeking to expand their offline presence and enter new markets. Foodtech startup Dil Foods recently raised Rs 72 crore to expand its footprint and launch more cuisine offerings. Similarly, cafe chain Alienkind raised 3.2 million dollars in June, and bubble tea brand Boba Bhai raised Rs 40 crore earlier this year.

Popo Global's latest funding round positions the company to accelerate its expansion beyond Bengaluru and strengthen its presence in India's competitive food and beverage market. The investment from Artal Asia validates its differentiated operating model, which blends quick service efficiency with premium dining experiences. As investor appetite for food brands remains strong, Popo Global will aim to translate its local success into a broader national footprint.
