Octopus Energy Generation has significantly increased its investment in Cultivo, adding $60 million to an existing funding agreement for a total of $100 million. This partnership is set to accelerate the restoration of U.S. grasslands and the generation of high-quality, nature-based carbon credits. The move signals growing confidence from major energy investors in land regeneration as a viable climate solution and financial asset class.

Expanding a Successful Partnership

The additional $60 million in capital builds upon a fruitful two-year collaboration between Octopus Energy Generation and Cultivo. This expanded financial commitment is a direct response to the rapid and successful scaling of Cultivo's project pipeline across the United States. The partnership's proven track record has provided the confidence needed for this substantial increase in investment for future growth.

Cultivo has already made substantial progress, enrolling over 650,000 acres of grasslands into its program, an area comparable to Rhode Island. The company is on a clear trajectory to exceed two million acres this year, demonstrating its capacity for large-scale implementation. This enrolled land is projected to remove nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the next thirty years.

The Strategic Importance of Grasslands

U.S. grasslands represent the nation's largest land-use category, covering 659 million acres and playing a critical role in the climate ecosystem. These vast landscapes function as an essential carbon sink, storing more than one-third of the world's terrestrial carbon in their soils. Protecting and restoring these areas is therefore fundamental to achieving meaningful progress in global decarbonization efforts.

A growing number of corporations and investors are recognizing the value of soil carbon, driving a sharp increase in offtake agreements for removal credits. This market momentum is supported by the United Nations, which has declared 2026 the international year of rangelands and pastoralists. The designation highlights their importance in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security challenges simultaneously.

Enhancing Capabilities Through Acquisition

The funding announcement follows Cultivo's recent acquisition of Kateri, a prominent developer specializing in carbon projects on grasslands. This strategic integration combines Cultivo's advanced platform with Kateri's deep expertise in project development and on-the-ground implementation. The merger creates a powerhouse in the nature-based solutions sector with unparalleled capabilities from origination to monitoring.

Through the Kateri acquisition, Cultivo now offers a suite of advanced, tech-driven tools to land stewards and partners. These capabilities include virtual fencing, sophisticated soil carbon modeling, and an AI-powered platform that leverages real-world data. Such technologies ensure the integrity and efficiency of carbon removal projects while streamlining management and verification processes.

The expanded $100 million partnership between Octopus Energy Generation and Cultivo represents a major milestone for nature-based climate solutions. This substantial investment will not only scale up vital grassland restoration and carbon removal but also demonstrates the increasing financial viability of natural assets. It sets a powerful precedent for how private capital can be deployed to generate both environmental and economic returns.
