Nubank laid off part of its fraud investigation team after adopting artificial intelligence tools. The cuts affected just over 30 employees, according to Folha's C-level business site. The digital bank said the technology helped reduce fraud-related complaint queues by 80%.
How the cuts unfolded
Before the layoffs, about 40 fraud professionals had been moved to other teams. Most of those dismissed investigated shell accounts used to receive and spread stolen funds. Employees said managers announced the cuts in small video calls and removed access immediately.
Nubank's scale
Nubank is Brazil's largest private financial institution by client count. It reached 119.6 million customers in the third quarter of 2026, according to central bank data. The company also cut 296 workers in June 2023 and 14 more in November 2025.
What the AI now handles
Fraud investigation now depends on AI tools that spot suspicious activity and clear routine queues. Former employees said leaders told remaining staff that AI systems handle 72% of fraud work. Nubank said human analysts still review complex cases and audit the technology.
The bank described the change as a normal restructuring and offered dismissed workers severance and temporary health plan coverage. It said hiring continues according to business needs, but it did not confirm fraud investigation vacancies. The bank workers union had not responded to requests for comment.
