Nagare Labs emerged from stealth with US$5 million in funding led by Playground Global. The Atlanta-based Georgia Tech spinout develops memory technology for AI systems. Its work targets the gap between logic performance and memory bandwidth.

Founding team

Nagare Labs was co-founded by Dr. Suman Datta and Dr. Shimeng Yu. Datta serves as CEO and is a Georgia Tech professor. Yu is also a Georgia Tech professor and created the NeuroSim simulator.

What it builds

The company's core technology is called Z2RAM. It is a transistor-based, capacitor-less memory architecture. It combines SRAM-like speed with DRAM-level bit density.

Manufacturing approach

Nagare uses standard back-end-of-the-line integration processes. Its materials, tools, and chemicals are fab compatible. The design supports multiple layers with one lithography exposure and avoids costly EUV tools.

The memory is designed for 3D heterogeneous integration on top of logic die. It can lower energy consumption and space requirements. Nagare plans to move the technology from laboratory research to manufacturable memory chips.
