European financial services provider Mollie has announced a definitive agreement to acquire global bank payment company GoCardless. The transaction brings together two complementary payment providers to serve more than 350,000 businesses through a single platform combining card payments, bank payments, and local payment methods. The combination aims to simplify payment operations for merchants operating across multiple markets.

A Strategic Union to Simplify Payments

The acquisition addresses the challenge of fragmented payment infrastructure faced by businesses scaling internationally or operating recurring revenue models. By combining their respective strengths, Mollie and GoCardless plan to offer merchants a broader range of payment tools through one partner. The unified approach is intended to reduce operational complexity associated with managing multiple payment providers.

Empowering Businesses of All Sizes

The combined platform is positioned to support merchants ranging from small and medium-sized businesses to large enterprises. SMEs gain access to more advanced payment capabilities, while larger organizations can consolidate their European payment stack within a single ecosystem. Both companies frame the transaction as improving access to scalable payment infrastructure across the business spectrum.

Tackling Recurring Revenue Challenges

A core focus of the combined offering is recurring payments. By integrating GoCardless’s bank payment network alongside card payments, the platform aims to reduce failed transactions that contribute to involuntary churn for subscription-based businesses. This approach supports more reliable payment collection and improved cash flow for recurring billing models.

The benefits also extend to software-as-a-service platforms and vertical software providers using the Mollie Connect ecosystem. These platforms will be able to embed bank payments alongside card payments within a single integrated solution for their customers.

Leadership Vision for a Unified Future

Mollie CEO Koen Köppen said the acquisition supports the company’s mission to reduce financial bureaucracy, noting the limitations of card-only payment strategies for recurring revenue use cases. He highlighted GoCardless’s bank payment capabilities as a strong complement to Mollie’s existing platform.

GoCardless CEO and co-founder Hiroki Takeuchi welcomed the agreement, describing the two businesses as highly complementary. He stated that combining expertise across card, bank, and local payment methods strengthens the value proposition for customers and supports higher standards across the payments industry.

Integration and Regulatory Outlook

The integration of GoCardless’s products into the Mollie platform will take place through a phased process, with both companies emphasizing continuity of service and localized customer support. Existing customers will continue to be supported throughout the transition.

Completion of the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. The companies expect the acquisition to be finalized by mid-2026.

The acquisition of GoCardless by Mollie represents a significant development in the European payments sector, bringing together complementary payment capabilities to better support international expansion and recurring revenue models.
