UK-based robotics software startup Kinematic Trees has successfully secured £585,000 in a pre-seed funding round led by venture capital firm Haatch. The company aims to accelerate the adoption of robotics with its nature-inspired, hardware-agnostic software platform. This new capital will fuel product development and team expansion as the company prepares for international deployment.

Addressing the Software Bottleneck in Robotics

Recent advancements in hardware and artificial intelligence have significantly lowered the cost of robotic systems, yet software remains a primary obstacle to widespread use. According to CEO Dr. Stuart Wilson, this software limitation often prevents robots from being adaptable and useful across different tasks. This bottleneck means expensive hardware can become obsolete simply because its original software is no longer supported or relevant.

A Nature-Inspired Universal Platform

Kinematic Trees is developing a universal intelligence layer inspired by the principles of natural intelligence and how animal brains adapt. The platform captures specialist expertise in modular software components that can be reused and combined for new applications. This approach enables software to evolve across different robot embodiments, creating a more flexible and sustainable ecosystem.

The core concept, which the founders describe as a "universal robot brain," separates the mind, or software, from the body, or hardware. This allows for unprecedented software portability, ensuring that advanced control systems are not tied to a single machine. CTO Daniel Camilleri emphasizes that this will allow one software "mind" to evolve through many different physical forms.

Vision for a New Robotics Ecosystem

The company's vision is to make robots more useful, inherently safe, and highly customizable for a range of industries. This includes applications in manufacturing, healthcare, and even consumer homes, moving beyond single-purpose machines. The goal is to create an ecosystem of reusable capabilities that accelerates innovation in both industrial and personal robotics.

Strategic Investment and Future Growth

The £585,000 investment from Haatch will be instrumental in scaling the company's operations and realizing its ambitious goals. Funds are earmarked for expanding the commercial, robotics, and software engineering teams across its UK hubs in London, Nottinghamshire, and Sheffield. This strategic growth supports ongoing product development and prepares the company for international market entry.

Kinematic Trees has outlined a clear roadmap for the near future, with plans to announce its first factory deployments in the latter half of 2026. The company also intends to forge new partnerships with robotics providers and software developers during this period. These milestones will be crucial in demonstrating the commercial viability and practical application of its innovative platform.

With this significant pre-seed funding, Kinematic Trees is well-positioned to challenge the long-standing software limitations that have hindered the robotics industry. By providing a flexible and evolving intelligence layer, the company aims to unlock the full potential of robotic hardware across diverse sectors. Its nature-inspired approach could prove pivotal in finally delivering the long-overdue promise of widespread, adaptable robotics for businesses and consumers alike.
