Abu Dhabi is bolstering its startup ecosystem by investing in local talent at the earliest stages, a strategy highlighted by the inaugural MZN Hub71 Demo Day. This event, a collaboration between the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development (KFED) and Hub71, showcased 17 Emirati founders who completed a rigorous three-month venture-building program. The initiative aims to transform innovative ideas into viable businesses, strengthening the pipeline of homegrown technology companies.
Fostering Homegrown Innovation
The MZN Hub71 program is designed to support aspiring entrepreneurs from the conceptual phase, a crucial step before they qualify for later-stage accelerators. It provides a structured pathway for founders to develop a minimum viable product while connecting them with mentors, investors, and corporate partners. This focus on early-stage development signals a continued government commitment to cultivating local innovation alongside attracting international talent.
The inaugural cohort of 17 founders developed ventures across diverse sectors, including AI, HealthTech, ClimateTech, FinTech, and AgriTech. Over the 12-week program, participants engaged in 21 workshops and pitch clinics covering everything from product development and market validation to fundraising strategies. This comprehensive training equipped them with the essential skills needed to build and scale their startups effectively.
Spotlight on the Winners
The program culminated in a Demo Day at MZN Hub Al Ain, where founders presented their startups to a panel of judges, investors, and ecosystem partners. Following a competitive live pitch session, three ventures were awarded in-kind support packages to accelerate their growth. The event served as a critical platform for these emerging companies to gain visibility and validation.
Securing the top prize was Limb, an AI-powered physiotherapy platform that enables remote patient monitoring and personalized rehabilitation. The startup received an in-kind support package valued at AED 100,000 (approximately USD 27,200) to advance its mission. This award underscores the potential of HealthTech solutions emerging from the local ecosystem.
Placing second, Reach LLM, an AI platform that helps brands optimize their visibility across large language models, was awarded AED 60,000 (approximately USD 16,300). In third place, Hign Al Khaleej, a digital marketplace for buying and auctioning camels in the Gulf, received AED 40,000 (approximately USD 10,900). These awards provide crucial early-stage resources for the promising ventures.
Strategic Impact on Abu Dhabi's Ecosystem
The MZN Hub71 initiative addresses a significant gap in the regional startup landscape by nurturing entrepreneurs at the idea stage. This approach strengthens Abu Dhabi’s founder development ecosystem and aligns with broader economic diversification goals across the Gulf. By building a more robust pipeline of local startups, the program creates more opportunities for early-stage investors.
Basma Ahmed AlBadi AlDhaheri, Head of Value Creation at Hub71, emphasized the importance of providing the right environment for founders to build and grow. She noted that the achievements of the cohort demonstrate the power of early-stage support in positioning entrepreneurs for long-term success. This foundational guidance helps them build companies that can create a lasting impact for Abu Dhabi and beyond.
The inaugural MZN Hub71 Demo Day marks a successful milestone, but it is just the beginning for these entrepreneurs. The cohort will now transition into Hub71’s broader ecosystem, gaining continued access to mentors, investors, and corporate partners. The ultimate success of the program will be measured by how many of these ventures secure funding, achieve commercial traction, and become the next generation of high-growth Emirati startups.
