A Bengaluru-based software firm, Anthropic Software Private Ltd., has initiated legal action against the prominent US artificial intelligence company Anthropic PBC. The lawsuit, filed in a Karnataka commercial court, alleges that the American firm's recent expansion into India has created significant brand confusion and diluted the local company's market presence. This case highlights the growing challenges local businesses face when global technology giants enter established regional markets with similar branding.


Allegations of Prior Use and Brand Dilution

Anthropic Software Private Ltd. claims it has operated under the "Anthropic" name since its founding in 2017, four years before the US AI firm was established in 2021. The Indian company argues that its continuous use of the name has built distinct brand recognition, particularly within India's education and government sectors. The complaint asserts that the US firm's market entry is misrepresenting its identity and weakening the local brand's established equity.

The core of the dispute centers on diminished online visibility and customer confusion. The Indian firm contends that search platforms, including Google, now prioritize the well-funded US entity, effectively burying the local company in search results. This displacement has allegedly caused confusion among its customers, partners, and stakeholders who are now struggling to find the correct company online, impacting its discoverability.

The Stakes of the Legal Battle

The Bengaluru-based company is seeking significant legal remedies to protect its brand identity. The lawsuit requests a permanent injunction to prevent the US firm from operating under the name in India, along with the withdrawal of its services from the country. Additionally, the Indian firm is seeking damages amounting to approximately $110,000 to compensate for the alleged harm to its business and brand reputation.

The court in Belagavi has acknowledged the case, issuing a summons to the US-based Anthropic PBC. However, it declined to grant an interim injunction in a preliminary order dated January 20, allowing the US firm to continue its operations for now. The court has bypassed mediation and scheduled the next hearing for February 16, 2026, signaling that it recognizes the matter's urgency and complexity.

This legal conflict unfolds as the US-based Anthropic aggressively expands its footprint in the strategic Indian market. The company recently announced the opening of an India office and appointed former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose to lead its local operations. Anthropic Software Private Ltd. is an established entity focused on developing digital platforms for underserved regions in India, including rural areas. Its product suite includes an AI-enabled education ERP system, a competitive examination platform, and a patented driving safety solution. The company's founder, Mohammad Ayyaz Mulla, stated the legal action aims for clarity and recognition rather than direct confrontation with the global giant.
