Ground State Ventures, formerly known as QDNL Participations, has successfully closed an oversubscribed $88 million fund dedicated to early-stage quantum technology. This new capital, exceeding the initial $70 million target, will fuel the firm's mission to invest in foundational quantum startups globally. The Amsterdam-based investor has already established a significant international presence with offices in London and San Francisco to support its expanding portfolio.

From National Initiative to Global Force

The firm originated in 2022 as QDNL Participations with a €15 million fund backed exclusively by Quantum Delta NL to support local university spinouts. This initial phase proved successful, fostering the growth of pioneering Dutch companies like QuantWare and Qblox. The evolution reflects a strategic shift from a national focus to a worldwide search for transformative quantum innovations.

The rebranding to Ground State Ventures signifies this broader ambition, drawing its name from a core concept in quantum science. In physics, the ground state represents a particle's baseline, which can be elevated to an "excited state" with added energy. This metaphor captures the firm's goal of providing the initial capital and support to elevate promising research into influential companies.

A Proactive Investment Philosophy

Ground State Ventures distinguishes itself by proactively engaging with top-tier research groups at leading universities before a company is even formed. Founder Ton van’t Noordende emphasizes this approach allows them to identify and back foundational ideas at their absolute inception. This strategy targets talent from institutions like MIT, Stanford, and Oxford, aiming to provide the crucial first check.

The fund typically invests between $500,000 and $1.5 million in these initial stages, acting as the lead investor of record. Its team, comprising physicists with PhDs from elite universities, provides deep technical diligence and guidance to the nascent companies. This combination of early capital and specialized expertise is central to its value proposition for scientific founders.

Building a Diverse Quantum Ecosystem

The firm's investment scope covers the entire quantum stack, including computing, networking, sensing, and essential infrastructure. In less than 15 months, its portfolio of 15 companies across Europe and the US has achieved a collective value of $1.3 billion. This demonstrates the rapid progress and significant potential within the deep-tech ventures it supports.

While the quantum field is often homogenous, the firm has cultivated a notably diverse portfolio. Van’t Noordende notes that six of their fifteen current investments feature a female CEO or co-founder. This outcome is presented as a natural result of focusing on finding the best possible teams and opportunities in the market.

Strategic Support and Future Ambitions

Beyond providing capital, Ground State Ventures takes an active role by typically assuming a board seat in its portfolio companies. This hands-on approach ensures founders receive continuous strategic support, though they always remain in the driver's seat. The firm positions itself as a dedicated partner committed to helping founders navigate the challenges of building a deep-tech company.

With the new fund, the firm plans to expand its portfolio to approximately 30 companies over the next few years. The ultimate measure of success, according to van’t Noordende, is to become the best-performing deep tech fund of its vintage. This ambition extends beyond quantum to delivering superior returns and establishing a benchmark for the entire sector.

The successful closure of this $88 million fund marks a significant milestone for Ground State Ventures and the broader quantum technology landscape. By combining deep scientific insight with a proactive venture capital model, the firm is uniquely positioned to nurture groundbreaking ideas. Its commitment to backing foundational science early on promises to accelerate the development of the next generation of quantum infrastructure.
