GreatAsic Technology, a Malaysian fabless custom chip design company, has successfully secured US$6.9 million in a Pre-Series A funding round. The investment was led by Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India, with participation from Ehsan Kapital and Gobi Partners. This capital injection will fuel engineering team expansion, scale operations, and accelerate the development of advanced silicon projects for high-growth markets.

A Strategic Shift for Malaysia's Semiconductor Industry

This funding round marks a pivotal moment for Malaysia's semiconductor sector, aligning with the nation's ambition to transition from manufacturing to high-value design. For decades, the country has been a global hub for chip assembly and testing, a role defined by the "Made in Malaysia" label. GreatAsic's emergence supports the National Semiconductor Strategy's goal of fostering a "Made by Malaysia" ecosystem for integrated circuits.

Bolstering Capabilities with Key Partnerships

A significant technical advantage for GreatAsic is its access to Arm Holdings' semiconductor intellectual property, a crucial enabler for modern chip design. The company is among the first in Malaysia to secure both Arm Flexible Access and Arm Neoverse Compute Subsystems tokens. This access dramatically reduces development time and risk, shortening the path from architectural concept to mass production for complex System-on-Chip platforms.

Experienced Leadership and Investor Confidence

The company is helmed by a team of seasoned industry veterans, which has been a key factor in attracting investor confidence. Founder and CEO Ong Chin Hu and Co-Founder and CTO Michael Liew Woon Chin bring decades of experience from leadership roles at global giants like Intel, Marvell, and Broadcom. Their proven track record includes multiple successful full-mask tape-outs and high-volume production, demonstrating a deep understanding of the silicon lifecycle.

Investors have expressed strong belief in the team's ability to execute on its ambitious vision. Chan Yip Pang of Vertex Ventures noted that designing chips is a far more valuable undertaking than assembly, and few teams in the region are equipped for the challenge. This investment is a testament to the founders' expertise and a strategic bet on Malaysia's potential to become a hub for front-end semiconductor design.

The Role of a Supportive Ecosystem

GreatAsic's growth is also nurtured by a robust local ecosystem designed to cultivate innovation in the semiconductor space. The company benefits from the infrastructure and support provided by the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park, operated by the Selangor Information Technology & Digital Economy Corporation (SIDEC). This public-private collaboration is essential for creating a competitive environment where local design houses can thrive and attract global capital.

The participation of Ehsan Kapital, a semiconductor-focused fund backed by state entities, further underscores this integrated support system. This model combines world-class infrastructure, access to critical design tools, and targeted venture capital to scale promising companies. Such concentrated efforts are vital for positioning Malaysia as a key node in the global semiconductor value chain, moving beyond manufacturing.

Targeting High-Growth Global Markets

The newly acquired funds will be directed toward developing custom ASICs and AI SoC platforms for rapidly expanding markets. GreatAsic is focusing its efforts on the data centre, Edge AI, and automotive sectors, where demand for specialized, high-performance silicon is surging. By creating tailored solutions, the company aims to provide customers with advantages in energy efficiency, cost, and performance over off-the-shelf components.

This US$6.9 million funding round is more than a financial milestone for GreatAsic; it is a powerful validation of Malaysia's strategic pivot towards high-value chip design. With experienced leadership, key technology partnerships, and strong ecosystem support, the company is well-positioned to address the growing demand for custom silicon. GreatAsic's journey represents a significant step in Southeast Asia's evolving narrative, proving the region's capacity to innovate and design the technologies of the future.
