GPCR, a South Korean biotechnology company focused on innovative therapies, announced on the 22nd that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Medical AI Alliance, also known as MAA. The agreement centers on building and promoting a medical artificial intelligence ecosystem. The collaboration is expected to connect GPCR's drug development capabilities with a broad network of healthcare, AI, and biomedical partners.

About the Medical AI Alliance

The Medical AI Alliance was established to drive medical data innovation and build a next-generation healthcare ecosystem. It was formed by leading medical, AI, and biotech companies including Mediana, Vuno, and Selvas AI. Its membership now spans multiple countries and includes organizations such as Hanmi Science, JLK, Hancom With, Polaris AI Pharma, HLB Global, and Indonesia's Siloam Hospitals Group.

Key Areas of Collaboration

Under the new agreement, GPCR and MAA will pursue cooperation in several areas tied to the alliance's medical AI ecosystem initiative. These include sharing, developing, and utilizing healthcare data as well as advancing medical AI technology research and development. The partners also plan to cooperate on data infrastructure, domestic and international networks, business opportunities, and other activities mutually agreed upon by both sides.

Leadership Views on the Partnership

Kim Chang-joon, head of the Medical AI Alliance, said the alliance was created to promote medical data innovation and next-generation healthcare across healthcare, AI, biopharma, and medical device fields. He explained that while listed company status is a membership criterion, capability and references are considered more important. Kim added that GPCR met these standards and that its participation expands the areas where the medical AI ecosystem can be applied.

GPCR's R&D Strengths

Shin Dong-seung, CEO of GPCR, stated that the company's capabilities and technical team were highly evaluated despite the alliance's demanding entry requirements. He highlighted that Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Pina Cardarelli previously contributed to the development of Yervoy and Opdivo at Bristol Myers Squibb. GPCR has built expertise in GPCR-targeted therapies from early target discovery through late-stage clinical development, including a completed U.S. Phase 2 trial.

Data Use and AI-Driven Drug Development

The collaboration allows GPCR to utilize data from the completed U.S. FDA Phase 2 trial of GPC100 combined with propranolol. GPCR also expects to integrate AI-based approaches into its GPCR drug discovery programs. According to the company, this convergence may shorten the time needed to enter the medical AI ecosystem market.

Commercial and Scientific Position

GPCR focuses on targeting G protein-coupled receptors, which account for approximately 35 percent of approved drugs worldwide. The company was the first to identify a heteromer formed by CXCR4 and ADRB2 and successfully completed a U.S. FDA Phase 2 study using GPC100 with propranolol. In August, GPCR signed a global exclusive license agreement valued at 475 billion Korean won, and it is advancing an orphan GPCR target for next-generation obesity therapies.

The memorandum of understanding positions GPCR within one of South Korea's largest medical AI alliances at a time when data-driven drug development is gaining momentum. By combining clinical data with AI technologies, the partnership may support new approaches to GPCR-targeted therapies and expand the global medical AI ecosystem. The agreement highlights the growing importance of cross-sector collaboration among biotech, healthcare, and artificial intelligence companies.
