GalaxEye Secures Landmark US Patent for OptoSAR Satellite Imaging

First Indian startup to win US patent for satellite imaging with optical and SAR sensor alignment

GalaxEye, an Indian space technology company focused on next-generation Earth observation, has received a United States patent for the core technology behind its OptoSAR imaging capabilities. The grant makes GalaxEye the first Indian startup to secure a US patent for satellite imaging technology. The same foundational invention is already protected by a patent in India, underlining the company's growing intellectual property position.


Addressing a Core Earth Observation Challenge

The patent covers GalaxEye's architecture and system for aligning and synchronising optical and microwave sensors during data acquisition. This allows optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar, or SAR, sensors to collect spatially and temporally matched observations at the same time. The approach resolves a traditional limitation in which optical and radar imagery are captured separately and later combined through postprocessing, often introducing gaps and misalignment.

Strategic Value of the United States Patent

Securing protection in the United States is strategically important as GalaxEye develops technology for a global Earth observation market. The company's intellectual property strategy focuses on safeguarding the fundamental architecture of multi-sensor imaging rather than individual components. The US grant adds a critical layer of global intellectual property protection to an invention that was conceived and engineered entirely in India.

Mission Drishti and Technological Validation

The patented technology is closely linked to GalaxEye's flagship Mission Drishti, which carried its OptoSAR capability to space. On May 3, 2026, the company launched Drishti, the world's first OptoSAR imaging satellite, combining multispectral imaging and Synthetic Aperture Radar on a single platform. At approximately 190 kilograms, it was India's largest privately built Earth observation satellite at the time of launch.

Commercial Applications and Constellation Plans

GalaxEye is preparing to scale toward a planned 30-satellite constellation over the next five years. The network is expected to support defence, government, and commercial customers across national security, agriculture, infrastructure, insurance, maritime intelligence, and disaster management. The company's OptoSAR approach aims to deliver visual and spectral information from optical imaging together with the all-weather, day-and-night reliability of SAR in a single Earth observation system.

Voices from the Space Ecosystem

Somanath S Panicker, former chairman of Isro, described the patent as "a powerful example of the innovation emerging from India's private space ecosystem." He added that the technology has strong commercial potential across applications requiring richer, more actionable intelligence. Suyash Singh, founder and chief executive officer of GalaxEye, said, "This is not just a patent for us; this is an invention that came out of India."

From Indian Invention to Global Benchmark

The US patent builds on GalaxEye's existing intellectual property position in India, where the same foundational technology has already been granted protection. Suyash Singh noted that the company is building global-first technology in India rather than importing or adapting it. He added, "This patented technology enables us to serve the global markets and provide weather agnostic imaging capabilities across sectors like defence, agriculture, insurance, disaster response and more."


GalaxEye's United States patent marks a significant step for Indian space technology and for global Earth observation. By protecting a foundational multi-sensor imaging architecture, the company strengthens its ability to serve international customers with weather-agnostic intelligence. The milestone reinforces India's ongoing shift from manufacturing advanced technology to inventing globally relevant solutions that the world increasingly needs.
