Fly.io has announced a major strategic pivot towards providing infrastructure for artificial intelligence agents, backed by a new $25 million Series D funding round. The company also appointed former Docker CEO Scott Johnston to lead this new chapter, signaling a significant move to capitalize on the growing agentic AI market. This infusion of capital and leadership aims to solidify Fly.io's position as a foundational platform for the next generation of software development.

A New Infrastructure Paradigm for AI Agents

Fly.io is repositioning its services to meet the unique demands of AI agents, which the company believes require a fundamentally different infrastructure than traditional applications. This new vision focuses on providing "computers for agents," which are persistent, stateful environments designed for long-running tasks. The platform offers durable disk drives and secure connectivity, moving away from the disposable execution models common in early AI development.

Surging Growth Driven by Agent Workloads

The company's strategic shift is validated by its strongest financial quarter to date, fueled almost entirely by agent-based workloads. With a customer base of over 37,000, Fly.io reports that more than 8,000 are already agent-native, demonstrating rapid adoption of its platform. This momentum highlights a clear market need for specialized infrastructure that can support the continuous operation of sophisticated AI applications.

Revenue from Fly.io's largest agent-native customers has surged nearly twelvefold over the past year, now accounting for approximately two-thirds of its top-tier revenue. Companies such as Firecrawl, Kilocode, and Plastic Labs are leveraging the platform to build and deploy production-level AI systems. This strong customer validation underscores the viability of Fly.io's focus on the burgeoning agent ecosystem and its specific infrastructure requirements.

Securing $25 Million for Accelerated Expansion

To fuel its ambitious goals, Fly.io has successfully closed a $25 million Series D funding round co-led by Dell Technologies Capital and Intel Capital. The round also saw participation from existing investors including Andreessen Horowitz, EQT, Geodesic, and YC. This significant investment will be used to accelerate the company's leadership in building and scaling its infrastructure tailored for agentic AI applications.

As part of the investment, Martin Casado of Andreessen Horowitz and Daniel Docter of Dell Technologies Capital will join the company's board of directors. Casado noted that the nature of computing changes when the primary user is not a person, a shift Fly.io has been preparing for. This high-profile backing reinforces investor confidence in the company's vision for the future of AI-driven software deployment.

Scott Johnston Appointed as New Chief Executive

Fly.io has appointed Scott Johnston as its new Chief Executive Officer and a member of the board to guide the company through its next phase of growth. Johnston brings extensive experience in scaling infrastructure platforms, having previously served as CEO of Docker and held leadership positions at Puppet and Netscape. His expertise is expected to be instrumental in establishing Fly.io as a category leader in the agent infrastructure market.

Founder Kurt Mackey will transition to an advisory role while remaining on the board, where he will continue to shape the company's long-term technical strategy. Mackey expressed that Johnston is the right leader to bring the necessary focus and speed to meet the increasing demand for powerful infrastructure. This leadership transition is designed to combine deep technical vision with proven experience in scaling high-growth technology companies.

With a fresh $25 million in funding, a new and experienced CEO, and a clear focus on the AI agent market, Fly.io is strategically positioned for significant growth. The company's pivot to providing robust, persistent infrastructure addresses a critical need in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. This combination of capital, leadership, and market timing poises Fly.io to become a defining platform for the next wave of computing.
