Elle MD Technologies, a Nova Scotia-based healthtech startup, has successfully raised CAD 1.1 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round. The company is developing a novel non-hormonal contraceptive ring called Livv, designed to offer women a new choice in reproductive health. The new capital will support the device’s progression toward its first-in-human clinical trials.

Addressing a Gap in Contraception

Many women find that existing birth control methods involve significant trade-offs, ranging from the side effects associated with hormonal contraceptives to the discomfort of intrauterine devices. Elle MD aims to address this gap by providing an alternative that avoids many of these common concerns. The company’s innovation responds to demand from patients seeking greater control and fewer side effects from their reproductive health options.

Founder’s Vision and Product Innovation

The company was founded by Dr. Jennifer Johnston, a family physician who recognized the need for better contraceptive options through her clinical practice and personal experience. Inspired by patient feedback, she developed Livv, a flexible silicone ring that uses copper to prevent pregnancy. The design offers the monthly convenience of a vaginal ring without releasing hormones into the body.

Livv is similar in form to NuvaRing but uses a different mechanism of action. Its copper component interferes with sperm, helping prevent fertilization without the systemic effects associated with hormonal contraception. A key feature of the device is its user-controlled flexibility, as it can be inserted and removed by the patient.

Securing Strategic Investment

The CAD 1.1 million financing round attracted participation from a diverse group of investors, signaling confidence in Elle MD’s mission. Participants included Elizabeth Edwards, who is affiliated with consumer packaged goods investment firm H Ventures, alongside Dr. Robin Leblanc, Invest Nova Scotia, and the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation. H Ventures itself did not participate in the round.

The oversubscribed financing highlights growing investor interest in innovative solutions addressing women’s health. It also provides Elle MD with the resources needed to advance Livv through the next stage of clinical development.

Pathway to Clinical Trials

With the new capital, Elle MD is preparing to initiate its first clinical trial involving human participants at The Ottawa Hospital. This important step, which remains subject to Health Canada approval, will focus on evaluating the safety of the Livv device. The company has already established a foundation through preclinical trials that demonstrated encouraging safety and efficacy results.

The Growing Femtech Landscape

Elle MD’s fundraising success reflects a broader positive trend within the femtech sector, which has historically received a limited share of healthcare investment. The company’s ability to secure financing indicates that innovations focused on women’s health are attracting increasing attention and financial support. Further validation has come through Elle MD’s completion of an accelerator program with pharmaceutical company Organon, which provided industry expertise and collaboration opportunities.

The latest funding round marks a significant milestone for Elle MD Technologies, moving the company from product development toward the critical clinical-validation phase. The financing supports its innovative approach and brings a potential new contraceptive option closer to commercialization. If successful, Livv could expand reproductive health choices by offering women an effective, non-hormonal, and user-controlled alternative.
