Expedition Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology firm, has successfully secured $115 million in an oversubscribed Series B financing round. This funding coincides with the company dosing its first patient in a Phase 2 clinical trial for its lead drug candidate, EXPD-101. The financing, led by global investor General Atlantic, marks a significant step forward in developing new treatments for inflammatory and respiratory diseases.

Significant Financial Backing for Novel Therapies

The substantial $115 million funding round was spearheaded by General Atlantic, with new participation from RA Capital and Vivo Capital. Support was also strong from all existing investors, including Sofinnova Investments, Novo Holdings, and Forbion, among others. This broad syndicate of top-tier investors underscores the high confidence in the company's scientific platform and its potential to address unmet medical needs.

Proceeds from the financing are earmarked for advancing EXPD-101 through its crucial Phase 2 clinical development for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The capital will also be used to expand Expedition's pipeline of next-generation therapies for other inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, the investment will bolster the company's research and discovery engine to fuel future innovation and growth in its therapeutic areas.

Advancing a Promising COPD Treatment

In a key operational milestone, Expedition has initiated its global Phase 2 clinical trial by dosing the first patient with EXPD-101. This study is the first global, randomized Phase 2 trial of a DPP1 inhibitor specifically for COPD patients. The trial's commencement represents a critical inflection point for the company as it transitions into later-stage clinical evaluation for its lead asset.

EXPD-101 is a next-generation oral small molecule designed to inhibit DPP1, targeting the neutrophilic inflammation that is a primary driver of COPD. The drug demonstrated a favorable safety profile in Phase 1 studies, being well tolerated with no dose-limiting toxicities and supporting once-daily oral dosing. This investigational therapy holds first-and-best-in-class potential by addressing the underlying disease mechanism rather than just managing symptoms.

Leadership and Expert Endorsements

Yi Larson, Founder and CEO of Expedition Therapeutics, described the dual achievements as a defining milestone for the company. She emphasized that the oversubscribed financing brings together a premier group of investors who share the company's vision. Larson expressed confidence in the mission to develop differentiated therapies for patients suffering from serious chronic diseases like COPD.

As part of the financing agreement, Dr. Brett Zbar, Managing Director and Global Head of Life Sciences at General Atlantic, will join Expedition's Board of Directors. Dr. Zbar noted the company's differentiated scientific approach to tackling significant unmet needs in inflammatory and respiratory diseases. He conveyed his excitement to support the Expedition team as they advance their lead candidate through pivotal clinical development stages.

The scientific rationale was further supported by Dr. James Chalmers of the University of Oxford, a leading expert in the field. He highlighted that current COPD therapies primarily manage symptoms without addressing the chronic inflammation that drives disease progression. Dr. Chalmers stated that by selectively targeting DPP1, this novel approach could interrupt a key inflammatory pathway and potentially improve patient outcomes.

The successful $115 million financing and the initiation of the Phase 2 trial for EXPD-101 firmly position Expedition Therapeutics for its next phase of growth. This dual achievement not only provides the necessary capital but also validates the company's innovative approach to treating COPD. With strong investor backing and a promising clinical candidate, Expedition is poised to make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients worldwide.
