Australian workforce management platform Employment Hero has launched HeroForce, an innovative AI-powered system designed to simplify human resources for small businesses. The new co-employment model positions Employment Hero as the legal employer, managing complex tasks like payroll, compliance, and superannuation. This launch aims to fundamentally alter how businesses handle employment administration by shouldering the regulatory burden.

Addressing a Complex Regulatory Landscape

According to CEO Ben Thompson, the initiative responds to the increasing complexity and cost facing small and medium-sized businesses. He noted that the average SME spends between $40,000 and $80,000 annually just to remain compliant with employment law. Thompson argues that businesses often struggle not from dishonesty, but from the challenge of navigating specialized regulations while managing daily operations.

The HeroForce platform operates on an Employee of Record (EOR) model, where it handles key aspects of the employment relationship. This service manages everything from contracts and benefits to adherence with local industrial relations laws. Consequently, the original business can concentrate on its core objectives and growth without needing an extensive in-house HR department.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

What sets HeroForce apart is its integration of advanced artificial intelligence to manage workforce administration at scale. The system utilizes three distinct AI agents to streamline recruitment, payroll, and general HR functions. These tools can interpret modern awards, automate payroll calculations, and monitor compliance obligations for thousands of employees simultaneously.

To mitigate the risks associated with full automation, the platform incorporates a human-in-the-loop model for its HR AI agent. This approach ensures that human specialists can intervene to correct errors or handle complex situations that require nuanced judgment. It provides a crucial layer of oversight, addressing concerns about the reliability of AI in sensitive employment matters.

Redefining Employer Responsibility

A significant feature of the HeroForce offering is the transfer of legal liability from the client to Employment Hero. As the legal employer, the company assumes full responsibility for pay and award compliance, including in the unlikely event of errors. This commitment is designed to provide businesses with unprecedented peace of mind regarding complex regulatory obligations.

The company also takes responsibility for the defense of employment-related claims, such as those involving discrimination. However, there is a shared accountability when the conduct originates within the client's business, for example, from a manager's behavior. HeroForce has established clear processes for escalation and grievances to manage these nuanced situations effectively.

Global Reach and Market Context

Beyond its domestic focus, HeroForce is equipped to help businesses hire global talent with greater ease. The platform boasts access to workers across 180 jurisdictions, removing the need for clients to establish local hiring entities. The service is currently fully operational within the regulatory frameworks of Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

Employment Hero is a major player introducing AI into its EOR system, but it is not the only one in this emerging field. Other companies, such as local startup MyGig, are also developing AI-enabled solutions for workforce management. This trend highlights a broader industry shift towards leveraging technology to navigate the intricate world of employment law.

The launch of HeroForce represents a significant step towards simplifying the economics of employment for small and medium-sized enterprises. By combining an AI-driven platform with a co-employment model that assumes legal risk, Employment Hero aims to free up valuable business resources. This innovation could empower companies to redirect their focus from administrative burdens to strategic growth and expansion.
