Cyan Ventures has launched the Green Fuels Accelerator, a pioneering initiative to bolster Australia's domestic production of low-carbon liquid fuels. Backed by a significant funding injection from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and industry giants like Qantas and Boeing, the program aims to fast-track promising projects to commercial viability. This collaborative effort signals a major step towards enhancing the nation's fuel security and advancing its decarbonization agenda.
A Strategic Push for Fuel Independence
The accelerator is designed to address critical hurdles faced by early-stage projects, providing tailored advisory support across regulatory, technical, and commercial domains. Its primary objective is to de-risk these ventures, guiding them toward financial close and full-scale production. This strategic intervention aims to significantly reduce Australia's heavy reliance on imported fuels, which often constitutes over two-thirds of domestic demand.
The initiative is supported by a combined investment of over $2.4 million, with ARENA committing $766,000 and industry partners contributing a cumulative $1.7 million. Key partners including Qantas, Boeing, Mission Possible Partnership, and SYSTEMIQ will lend their expertise to provide crucial project advisory support. This financial and technical backing is essential for transforming innovative concepts into operational realities.
Pioneering Projects and Technologies
The accelerator has selected an initial cohort of seven diverse projects located across Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales. The chosen developers are Licella, Renergi, Renewable Developments Australia, Wagner Sustainable Fuels, Mercurius Biorefining, Wildfire Energy, and Ethtec. These companies represent the forefront of Australia's efforts to establish a robust and sustainable domestic fuels industry.
The selected projects showcase a wide array of conversion technologies and feedstock-to-fuel facilities, highlighting a versatile approach to biofuel production. These methods include advanced processes like hydrothermal liquefaction, grinding pyrolysis, and cellulosic ethanol conversion to process non-food biomass and waste streams. The primary focus is on producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other low-carbon liquid fuels.

Fraser Thompson, Managing Partner at Cyan Ventures, emphasized that the accelerator will provide the missing support needed to translate potential into production. He noted that while Australia has talented developers, they require assistance with financing structures, offtake agreements, and regulatory guidance. The program is designed to ensure these entrepreneurs can successfully build an industry the country genuinely needs.
ARENA CEO Darren Miller highlighted Australia's abundant feedstocks and strong research capability as key advantages for manufacturing low-carbon fuels. Both Qantas and Boeing echoed this sentiment, with Qantas underscoring the centrality of a domestic SAF industry to its decarbonization goals. Boeing noted the initiative's potential to secure energy independence and lower long-term fuel costs for the aviation sector.
