Edinburgh-based deep-tech firm Cnuic has successfully secured $3 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round. The investment, co-led by Tensor Ventures and Blank Space Ventures, will advance the company's groundbreaking photolithography technology. This innovation aims to revolutionize the manufacturing of photonic chips, heralding a new era in high-speed computing.


A New Paradigm in Chip Manufacturing

For decades, the semiconductor industry has relied on silicon chips, which are now approaching their physical performance limits. Photonic chips, which transmit data using light instead of electrons, offer a path to dramatically higher speeds and energy efficiency. However, their complex and costly manufacturing process has historically hindered mass adoption.

Cnuic has developed a working prototype of a completely new photolithography device to overcome these production hurdles. This system exploits the wave properties of light, enabling rapid and reconfigurable production with enhanced three-dimensional control. The technology represents a fundamental shift, making it possible to create complex photonic structures that were previously unachievable.

The $3 million funding round saw participation from Silicon Roundabout Ventures, Phasechange, SANDS, and Superlative. The fact that the round was oversubscribed signals strong confidence from the deep-tech investment community in Cnuic's technology. This capital will be crucial for scaling the company's innovative manufacturing platform.

Omar Durrani, co-founder of Cnuic, articulated the company's ambitious vision for the future. "We learned to use electrons; now we are learning to use light," he stated, emphasizing that Cnuic is building the essential tools for this transition. This perspective frames the company's work as a fundamental enabler of future technological leaps.

Investors echoed this sentiment, highlighting the technology's transformative potential for the industry. Ondřej Lipold of Tensor Ventures compared its impact to how PCs democratized computing power. His colleague Martin Drdúl added that this breakthrough could establish a new, prominent role for Europe in the global semiconductor market.
