Cellares, an Integrated Development and Manufacturing Organization (IDMO), has bolstered its Series D financing with a $20 million investment from ARK Invest. This addition brings the total round to $277 million, aimed at scaling the company's automated manufacturing solutions for cell therapies. The funding will accelerate the expansion of Cellares' global network of Smart Factories to meet growing patient demand for these life-saving treatments.

Strategic Investment to Overcome Manufacturing Hurdles

ARK Invest joins a prominent group of investors including BlackRock, Eclipse, and T. Rowe Price, signaling strong confidence in Cellares' mission. Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, highlighted that Cellares is positioned at the convergence of robotics, software, and biotechnology. This unique approach is seen as essential for transforming cell therapy production from a manual process into an industrial-scale operation.

The investment addresses a critical bottleneck in the biopharmaceutical industry: the complex and costly manufacturing of cell therapies. Cellares' IDMO model vertically integrates development and manufacturing to industrialize the production of these patient-specific treatments. This strategy aims to significantly lower costs and improve accessibility for patients worldwide who are in need of next-generation therapies.

Clinical and Commercial Validation Milestones

The company recently achieved a significant clinical milestone by manufacturing and delivering its first GMP-compliant cell therapy doses. These doses of rese-cel, an investigational CAR T therapy from Cabaletta Bio, were produced on the Cell Shuttle platform. Both doses successfully met all release specifications and were infused into patients according to schedule, proving the platform's clinical readiness.

This clinical success is complemented by strong commercial validation from major pharmaceutical partners. Cellares secured a 10-year commercial supply agreement with Cabaletta Bio to scale the manufacturing of rese-cel. This follows a landmark $380 million global manufacturing agreement with Bristol Myers Squibb, reserving capacity for its cell therapy programs.

Global Expansion and Technological Advancement

Cellares is actively expanding its global footprint to support large-scale commercial production beginning in 2027. The company currently operates IDMO Smart Factories in South San Francisco, California, and Bridgewater, New Jersey. Additional facilities are under development in Leiden, the Netherlands, and Kashiwa City, Japan, to create a standardized global manufacturing network.

Central to this expansion is the company's proprietary Cell Shuttle® platform, which has received the FDA's Advanced Manufacturing Technology designation. This fully automated system is designed to produce up to ten times more cell therapy batches than conventional methods. The platform's high success rate and efficiency are key to lowering manufacturing costs and meeting future patient demand.

With its newly expanded Series D funding and proven technological platform, Cellares is well-positioned to resolve the manufacturing challenges that have limited the reach of cell therapies. The company's recent clinical and commercial achievements underscore its progress toward industrializing production and expanding patient access. This strategic growth is set to play a pivotal role in making these advanced, life-saving treatments a mainstream reality.
