Asiana Fund, the investment platform backed by Jalaj Dani and the Dani family, has joined Taiwan-based JC Capital to launch a Rs 1,000 crore fund for India's technology and advanced manufacturing sectors. The Asiana-JCC Advanced Manufacturing & Innovation Fund includes a Rs 600 crore base corpus and a Rs 400 crore greenshoe option. The vehicle will target growth-stage companies with intellectual property in areas such as semiconductors, robotics, aerospace and defence.

Fund Structure and Investment Focus

The fund plans to build a portfolio of 12 to 15 companies, mainly at Series A and Series B stages, with capital reserved for follow-on rounds. It will focus on advanced manufacturing, robotics, semiconductors, computing, materials, sustainability, and aerospace and defence. The sponsors have committed more than 20 percent of the fund corpus, signalling strong alignment with limited partners.

An India-Taiwan Technology Corridor

The partnership combines Asiana Fund's knowledge of India's industrial landscape with JC Capital's access to Taiwan's semiconductor and electronics ecosystem. It aims to enable technology transfer, connect companies with global supply chains, and support international market expansion. JC Capital's investor base is more than 80 percent corporate LPs across the United States, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia, which the partners see as a strategic advantage.

JC Capital founder Jim Chen said Taiwan's ecosystem extends well beyond TSMC and includes many companies working closely on advanced technologies. He noted that India has a strong pool of semiconductor design talent, but local manufacturing capabilities will be important for a complete ecosystem. Chen added that emerging fields such as power semiconductors and compound semiconductors present significant potential.

Investment Approach and Commercialisation

The managers describe the vehicle as an early-growth fund rather than a provider of early-stage research and development capital. Chaitanya Dabholkar, chief investment officer at Asiana, said the team focuses on companies where technology has been proven and a path to commercialisation exists. It will evaluate ventures based on how quickly they can generate revenue and scale, rather than applying rigid technology readiness levels.

Asiana has invested more than Rs 700 crore across 11 private equity transactions since 2017. JC Capital has deployed over Rs 1,000 crore across 30 companies since 2019, with a focus on semiconductors, artificial intelligence and clean technology. The new fund's pipeline includes compound semiconductors, motion control for electric vehicles and robotics, secure silicon, smart grids and robotic vision.

Corporate Networks and Long-Term Focus

The partners intend to build a network of 10 to 15 Indian corporates that can serve as customers, suppliers or manufacturing partners for portfolio companies. Dani said capital alone will not determine success in sectors where technology, cost, quality and supply chains must develop together. He added that a carefully curated cap table can help a business succeed through investor relationships and expertise.

On valuations, Dani acknowledged that bubbles can emerge in manufacturing and deep tech, but execution quality matters more over long holding periods. He also cautioned against treating an IPO as a milestone in itself, saying it is primarily an exit route for some investors. The fund has a four-year deployment period followed by four years for harvesting and exits, with a possible two-year extension.

The launch signals growing investor confidence in India's advanced manufacturing and deep-tech ecosystem amid a realignment of global supply chains. By combining Indian industrial expertise with Taiwan's technology networks, the Asiana-JCC Advanced Manufacturing & Innovation Fund aims to help domestic companies compete internationally. Its concentrated strategy, corporate partnerships and long-term capital may support a new generation of IP-led businesses from India.
