AMD has announced a landmark £2 billion investment in the United Kingdom over the next five years to accelerate artificial intelligence innovation. The commitment, revealed by CEO Dr. Lisa Su at London Tech Week, will fund advanced computing infrastructure, research partnerships, and workforce development. This strategic move aims to bolster the UK's position as a global leader in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.


A Strategic Boost for UK's AI Ambitions

The five-year investment plan directly supports the UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and AI Hardware Strategy, broadening access to critical compute resources. Dr. Lisa Su stated that AMD is proud to deepen its commitment, working with partners to advance sovereign AI and drive economic growth. This initiative leverages the UK's existing talent pool and research excellence to pioneer the next era of artificial intelligence.

UK government leaders have welcomed the announcement as a significant vote of confidence in the nation's technological capabilities. Chancellor Rachel Reeves highlighted that the partnership will drive cutting-edge research and create jobs for the future. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall added that the investment reflects the strength of Britain's talent and helps build the infrastructure needed for innovation.

Pioneering Photonic Networking with Oriole

A key component of the investment is a collaboration with Oriole Networks, a spinout from University College London. Together, they will deploy the world's first large-scale AI system powered by a pure photonic network. This groundbreaking project is part of the UK government’s £50 million ARIA Scaling Inference Lab, designed to overcome AI infrastructure bottlenecks.

Traditional data centre networks rely on electronic switches, which introduce latency, consume significant power, and generate heat. Oriole’s PRISM platform revolutionizes this by removing electronic switches from the network core entirely, replacing them with nanosecond-scale optical circuit switching. This innovative approach allows data to travel as photons directly from chip to chip, streamlining communication.

The implementation of this photonic technology promises dramatic efficiency gains, cutting core network power consumption by 81% and reducing GPU idle time to below 1%. For Oriole Networks, this collaboration marks its first commercial deployment, providing a large-scale validation with a Tier 1 hardware partner. This move transitions photonic networking from a research concept to a foundational element of serious AI infrastructure.

Expanding National Supercomputing and Research

Beyond the Oriole partnership, AMD is deepening its ties with UK academia through a new collaboration with Imperial College London. This initiative will advance computational science, focusing on research in healthcare innovation and climate modeling. The partnership will also explore optimizing AI models and data-intensive applications on AMD's advanced compute platforms and open software.

AMD is also working with Dell Technologies and the University of Cambridge to expand the UK's national AI supercomputing capacity. This includes supporting the new Zenith AI supercomputer and the Sunrise fusion AI system, which is dedicated to fusion energy research. These powerful systems will support a wide range of scientific applications and strengthen the UK's sovereign AI capabilities.
