On September 24, 2026, Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) announced a significantly expanded relationship with Anthropic. The agreement includes an $11.6 billion contractual commitment over seven years to support Anthropic's accelerating CPU workload demands. Under the arrangement, Anthropic will leverage Akamai Cloud's distributed AI infrastructure and software.

Strategic Expansion and Financial Terms

The transaction provides for potential expansion by up to an additional $9 billion, which would bring the total possible commitment to approximately $20 billion. The new agreement adds to more than $2.8 billion in multi-year Cloud Infrastructure Services commitments that Akamai has already announced this year across its customer base. These contracts highlight rising demand for infrastructure that enables customers to build, deploy, and operate AI workloads at scale.

Warrant Structure and Shareholder Alignment

As part of the strategic alignment, Akamai issued a warrant to Anthropic for non-voting convertible Series B Preferred Stock representing 7.7 million shares of common stock on an as-converted basis. The warrant covers up to approximately 5% of Akamai's outstanding common stock and carries an exercise price of $111.33 per share. A portion representing about 2% of common stock outstanding is expected to vest in connection with the announced commitment, while the remaining portion vests as the relationship expands.

Platform Capabilities and Workload Support

Akamai Cloud supports a continuum of compute from core to edge through a distributed network that spans thousands of points of presence. The platform is built with diversified hardware to help customers build and run applications and optimize how they are served to users and agents. Akamai said this global infrastructure supports the full lifecycle of applications in the AI era while keeping them fast, reliable, and secure.

Capital Investment and Guidance

Akamai estimates total capital expenditures related to the $11.6 billion commitment will be approximately $5.5 billion. The company anticipates no impact to its 2026 revenue guidance as a result of the agreement. It expects to increase capital expenditures in 2026 by roughly $1.7 billion to secure and pre-purchase critical supply chain components, including memory.

Executive Perspective

Dr. Tom Leighton, co-founder and CEO of Akamai, said Anthropic is advancing the AI revolution and that Akamai is thrilled the company chose its capabilities for building and operating AI infrastructure at scale. He noted Akamai's reputation for helping customers achieve business-critical goals and build the future. Leighton added that the company's expanding global footprint and experience serving large enterprises position it as an infrastructure provider for secure and responsible AI applications.

Investor Update

Akamai will host a conference call to discuss the expanded relationship at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time on September 24, 2026. Participants can join by calling 1-833-634-5020 or 1-412-902-4238 for international callers and using the passcode Akamai Technologies Call. A live webcast of the call will also be available on the company's website.

The expanded relationship signals a meaningful long-term commitment between two companies operating at the center of the AI infrastructure market. It reflects how large-scale AI workloads are driving new commercial models and supply chain investments across the cloud industry. With a potential total value of approximately $20 billion, the agreement gives both Akamai and Anthropic a stronger foundation to pursue growth in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
