NetApp has announced its intention to acquire PEAK:AIO, a Manchester-based software-defined AI storage company known for its next-generation metadata architecture and high-performance parallel file systems. The planned acquisition is designed to accelerate NetApp's AI infrastructure roadmap by enhancing metadata services and parallel namespace innovation for AI clouds. The move reinforces NetApp's position in the rapidly expanding market for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Addressing the Limits of Traditional Storage

As artificial intelligence becomes embedded across enterprise workloads, organizations are encountering storage architectures that were not designed for the scale, concurrency, and performance of modern AI factories and data intensive applications. NetApp is developing an architecture that separates metadata from data so that metadata services can scale independently. This approach creates a foundation capable of supporting trillions of files, exabyte scale environments, and massively parallel workloads.

Metadata Innovation from Research Proven Origins

PEAK:AIO's technology emerged from collaborations with leading research institutions including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University. Its software defined platform delivers high performance AI storage from a single server to exabytes on industry standard hardware. The planned integration is expected to add specialized metadata services and parallel namespace capabilities to NetApp's ONTAP based data architecture while offering a clear evolution path for existing customers.

Combining Resilience with Parallel Performance

By combining PEAK:AIO's metadata innovations with NetApp ONTAP software, the companies aim to deliver an architecture that preserves the resilience, security, and operational maturity customers expect. The combined system is intended to support trillions of files and multi exabyte deployments while enabling parallel NFS based access for massively parallel workloads. Designed for large scale AI environments, it may help reduce data related GPU stalls, improve infrastructure efficiency, and accelerate AI innovation.

Leadership Perspectives on the Acquisition

NetApp Chief Executive Officer George Kurian explained that AI clouds require high performance shared storage that can scale alongside growing GPU clusters while maintaining resilience, security, and operational simplicity. He noted that PEAK:AIO supports the company's vision for a new generation of AI infrastructure built on scalable metadata services and the proven ONTAP foundation. PEAK:AIO founder and Chief Technology Officer Mark Klarzynski said the AI era demands a new approach to data infrastructure and that joining NetApp offers a chance to shape that future globally.

A Clear Path for ONTAP Customers

The planned acquisition is expected to give existing ONTAP customers a clear evolution path rather than a disruptive migration. It combines PEAK:AIO's global namespace and metadata scaling with NetApp's trusted data management software and operational maturity. The result is intended to simplify the deployment and operation of shared storage for increasingly large AI environments.

Transaction Status and Next Steps

The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. NetApp did not disclose financial terms associated with the planned acquisition. The company also stated that product development, release timing, and integration plans remain at its sole discretion and are subject to change without notice.

By acquiring PEAK:AIO, NetApp is moving to address a critical bottleneck in AI infrastructure: storage systems that cannot keep pace with the scale and concurrency of modern GPU clusters. The combination of PEAK:AIO's metadata architecture and parallel file system with ONTAP's enterprise foundation is designed to make AI-scale file infrastructure more practical and accessible. If completed, the acquisition will strengthen NetApp's ability to support the next wave of data-intensive artificial intelligence workloads.
