French greentech firm AFYREN has secured a significant €3 million grant from the Grand Est Region, allocated through the European Just Transition Fund. This funding is designated for enhancing performance at its AFYREN NEOXY biorefinery, which the company now fully owns. The announcement coincides with the company receiving the final €2.2 million installment of a separate grant from Bpifrance’s France Relance program.

Strategic Funding for Industrial Performance

The new €3 million grant originates from the European Union's Just Transition Fund, a program supporting regions affected by the green transition. Management is delegated to local authorities, with the Grand Est Region selecting AFYREN for this strategic support. The capital will directly finance performance-enhancing investments at the company's flagship AFYREN NEOXY plant.

This financial injection is timely, following AFYREN's recent move to take full ownership of the biorefinery. The company is executing an investment program to bolster the performance and efficiency of this key industrial asset. The grant provides crucial support for this initiative, reinforcing the plant's long-term operational and strategic development goals.

A Commitment to Regional Economic Resilience

The Just Transition Fund fosters economic models that balance environmental goals with social impact and resilience. AFYREN’s selection underscores its role in building a more robust local economy within the Grand Est region. The support recognizes the company's potential to create value, jobs, and sustainable skills while advancing decarbonization.

CEO Nicolas Sordet emphasized the growing relevance of bio-based solutions amid the fragility of oil-dependent economies. He stated the grant is meaningful as it comes from stakeholders dedicated to the economic vitality of their operating territories. This local backing validates the company's vision and its contribution to regional resilience and sustainability.

Validating a Mature Greentech Model

This funding serves as a strong endorsement of AFYREN's industrial maturity, distinguishing it within the greentech sector. The company has successfully transitioned from development to industrial-scale production and commercialization, a significant milestone. This achievement demonstrates a viable business model that is now being recognized for its proven capabilities.

Further validating its progress, AFYREN also received the final €2.2 million payment from a Bpifrance "France Relance" grant in March 2026. This payment was contingent upon the company achieving predefined operational and strategic milestones. Securing this installment highlights AFYREN's consistent execution and its importance in France's strategic industrial sectors.

AFYREN's Vision for a Biobased Future

Founded in 2012, AFYREN utilizes a proprietary fermentation technology to create its sustainable products. The process valorizes local, non-food agricultural co-products, transforming this biomass into a range of biobased, low-carbon carboxylic acids. This circular model provides a competitive alternative for manufacturers seeking to reduce their reliance on fossil-based resources.

The company's biobased ingredients serve a wide array of markets, including human and animal nutrition, flavors, and materials science. This versatility allows AFYREN to address decarbonization challenges across multiple industries without requiring changes to existing production processes. With a strong base in Europe, the company is expanding its global footprint with projects in Thailand and the Americas.

The combined financial support of over €5 million strengthens AFYREN's position and validates its industrial strategy for the NEOXY plant. This capital infusion not only accelerates performance improvements but also reaffirms the company's role as a pivotal greentech leader. AFYREN is now better equipped to drive the bio-based transition, fostering environmental progress and sustainable economic development.
