AegisAI, an email security firm founded by former Google security leaders, has successfully raised $36 million in a Series A funding round. The investment was led by Battery Ventures with participation from existing investors Accel and Foundation Capital, bringing the company's total funding to $49 million. This new capital will fuel the expansion of AegisAI's advanced AI-driven defense systems designed to combat the escalating threat of sophisticated, AI-generated email attacks.

The Escalating Threat of AI Spear Phishing

The digital landscape is facing a new and formidable challenge known as AI spear phishing, where generative AI is used to create highly personalized and convincing fraudulent emails. These attacks have grown fivefold in just one year, signaling a significant shift in cybercrime tactics. The FBI's latest Internet Crime Report corroborates this trend, with reported losses from cybercrime reaching a record $20.8 billion in 2025.

What was once a complex attack method reserved for nation-state actors is now widely accessible, enabling criminals to automate the process of researching targets and crafting flawless lures. This has led to a focus on precision over volume, with attackers impersonating trusted contacts to manipulate employees into compromising sensitive information. According to AegisAI, these AI-generated emails are 75% more effective at evading traditional security filters than human-written attacks.

The financial impact is staggering, with business email compromise (BEC) accounting for $11.64 billion in losses, vastly overshadowing the combined losses from ransomware and malware. A significant 72.6% of successful AI attacks originated from compromised but legitimate accounts, rendering standard email authentication protocols insufficient. This highlights a critical vulnerability in corporate security that relies on outdated threat detection models.

An AI-Powered Defense System

AegisAI is pioneering a new defense strategy by fighting AI with AI, a necessary evolution in cybersecurity. The company's platform deploys a network of autonomous AI agents directly within the inbox to analyze the intent and identity behind each message. This approach moves beyond pattern recognition, allowing the system to identify novel threats that can bypass conventional security measures.

The company was founded in 2025 by Cy Khormaee and Ryan Luo, veterans of Google's security division who were instrumental in developing systems like reCAPTCHA and Safe Browsing. Their expertise in protecting billions of users at scale informs AegisAI's unique architecture. The platform is designed to understand the nuances of human trust, which AI attackers are now adept at exploiting.

AegisAI's advanced agent, Vanguard, extends this protection by actively investigating suspicious links and attachments across the web. It can navigate adversarial CAPTCHAs and cloaked pages to uncover the true nature of a potential threat, delivering a comprehensive report within minutes. This proactive hunting capability significantly reduces the burden on security teams and minimizes response times.

Strategic Investment and Market Validation

The $36 million investment underscores strong market confidence in AegisAI's mission to redefine email security. Dharmesh Thakker, a general partner at Battery Ventures, noted that generative AI has broken the assumptions upon which legacy security was built. He emphasized that an equally capable AI operating at machine speed is the only viable defense against machine-generated attacks.

AegisAI plans to use the funds to scale its fleet of autonomous defense agents and accelerate the general availability of its Vanguard agent. The company will also expand its enterprise go-to-market strategy to meet growing demand. This strategic allocation of capital is aimed at solidifying AegisAI's position as a leader in the next generation of cybersecurity solutions.

Since its launch, the company has already demonstrated its value with customers in high-risk sectors like fintech and technology. Clients such as Mesh, LangChain, and Lokker have successfully deployed AegisAI to defend against sophisticated threats, including attacks originating from compromised third-party infrastructure. These early successes validate the platform's effectiveness in real-world scenarios.

As cybercriminals increasingly leverage artificial intelligence, AegisAI's significant funding round positions it to lead the charge in developing a new defensive standard. By deploying its own intelligent agents to protect the enterprise, the company is not just responding to the current threat landscape but actively shaping the future of email security. This investment marks a critical step in the industry-wide effort to restore trust in digital communications.
