ASX-listed Scalare Partners has acquired the prominent startup hub Fishburners, providing a lifeline just three weeks after it entered voluntary administration. This strategic move rescues one of Sydney's original coworking spaces and integrates it into Scalare's growing portfolio of startup services. The acquisition ensures the continuity of a brand that has supported over 35,000 entrepreneurs.

A Strategic Lifeline for a Startup Pioneer

Fishburners' financial troubles stemmed from a significant rental legacy debt owed to the New South Wales government. The organization faced arrears exceeding $2 million related to its former tenancy at the now-defunct Sydney Startup Hub. These long-standing issues ultimately pushed the not-for-profit's board to seek professional assistance to navigate the crisis.

The closure of the Sydney Startup Hub by the state government created prolonged uncertainty and forced a costly relocation to Tech Central. This transition, combined with the unresolved debt, inflicted additional losses on the organization as it attempted to pivot. Consequently, the board appointed KPMG as voluntary administrators after exhausting other options to resolve its financial predicament.

Details of the Acquisition

The acquisition was completed as a cash-only transaction, although specific financial terms were not publicly disclosed. In a statement to the ASX, Scalare Partners confirmed the deal, clarifying it is not material to the company's overall financial position. This swift purchase concluded a period of uncertainty for the well-known startup community.

Scalare's acquisition specifically includes the Fishburners brand, its programs, intellectual property, and community assets. The agreement was structured to exclude any of Fishburners' existing liabilities, and no employees were transferred as part of the deal. This allows Scalare to rebuild the brand without inheriting its past financial burdens.

Integrating into the Scalare Ecosystem

Scalare CEO Carolyn Breeze explained that incorporating Fishburners will enhance the company's capacity to support scalable technology startups. The move aims to improve founders' access to essential infrastructure, services, and capital. It will also generate valuable revenue and proprietary deal flow for Scalare's investment portfolio.

As an immediate benefit, members of the Fishburners community will gain access to Tank Stream Labs locations across the country. This includes a new dedicated Fishburners Hub at the Tank Stream Labs campus on Kent Street in Sydney. The integration provides founders with a broader network and more physical resources for their ventures.

Looking ahead, Scalare plans to reinvigorate the Fishburners brand with new investment-focused initiatives. The company will establish a dedicated Fishburners Investment Vehicle to fund promising startups emerging from its community. It also intends to relaunch its popular Pitch Nights and founder showcase programs on a national scale.

A Future-Proofed Legacy

Carolyn Breeze highlighted the historical significance of Fishburners within Australia's innovation landscape. She stated that Scalare is proud to continue this legacy by providing founders with stronger pathways to community and capital. The acquisition strengthens Scalare’s mission to build a highly connected ecosystem for Australian entrepreneurs.

The Fishburners board echoed this positive outlook in a statement confirming the sale to Scalare Partners. They asserted that the deal secures a sustainable future and ensures the continuity of the organization's mission. The board believes this evolution places the community in a well-capitalized environment for long-term success.

The acquisition of Fishburners by Scalare Partners marks a pivotal moment for the Australian startup ecosystem. It not only preserves a vital community institution but also strategically positions it for growth within a larger, publicly-listed entity. This new chapter promises renewed stability, ensuring Fishburners continues fostering the next generation of innovators.
