OptikosPrime has partnered with RED Driver Training to add phone-based vision screening for learner drivers. RED is one of the UK's leading driver education providers. Its network includes more than 1,700 driving instructors and delivers over 1.3 million training hours each year.
Screening in the app
VisionCheck will be integrated into the Learn to Drive with RED app. Learners can complete a screening in less than a minute on their phones. People whose results show a possible vision issue are encouraged to see an optometrist.
Road safety concerns
Research from Warwick Medical School and 32 police forces estimated that more than 1.2 million British drivers fail legal eyesight standards. Two-thirds of drivers who failed roadside checks owned corrective eyewear but were not wearing it. Nearly a third had not had an eye exam in more than two years.
What VisionCheck does
VisionCheck uses proprietary computer vision algorithms to spot potential refractive errors. It looks for signs of short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism without specialized optical equipment. The tool does not replace professional eye exams or the official driving eyesight test.
OptikosPrime is continuing to expand commercial partnerships across industries and markets. The company sees potential applications in education, workplaces, optical retail, and community health programs. RED will make the screening tool available through its learn-to-drive app.
