OpenAI has announced a significant expansion of its Codex platform, introducing new features designed to empower enterprise users beyond the software development community. The company revealed that Codex now serves over five million weekly active users, with a rapidly growing segment of non-technical professionals. These updates aim to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into a wide range of everyday business workflows.

Catering to a Growing Non-Technical User Base

While initially conceived for software engineering, Codex has found a substantial and rapidly expanding audience among knowledge workers. This group, which includes analysts, marketers, and designers, now constitutes approximately 20 percent of the platform's total user base. This demographic is expanding more than three times faster than its developer counterpart, signaling a clear market opportunity for OpenAI.

Specialized Workflows with New Plugins

To serve this diverse user base, OpenAI has launched six role-specific plugins that connect Codex to existing business tools and workflows. These initial plugins cover areas such as data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. They integrate with dozens of popular applications like Salesforce, Figma, and Databricks to streamline job-specific tasks.

Each plugin is designed to be effective immediately, bundling relevant applications, skills, and instructions to approximate a specific professional role. For instance, the sales plugin helps teams manage customer relationships using tools like HubSpot and Slack. OpenAI plans to release more plugins for functions like corporate finance, strategy consulting, and legal work in the near future.

Introducing Interactive Sites and Enhanced Editing

A major new feature, currently in preview for business and enterprise customers, is "Sites," which allows users to generate interactive, hosted websites from their work. This transforms static documents and analyses into dynamic dashboards, project hubs, or lightweight applications shareable via a simple URL. OpenAI is collaborating with partners like Wix and Webflow to build out this ecosystem.

Complementing these creation tools is a new "Annotations" feature, which provides users with granular control over AI-generated content. Users can now select a specific part of a document, chart, or website and provide precise instructions for refinement. This capability makes it easier to iterate on and perfect outputs without having to start from scratch on the entire project.

A Strategic Push into the Enterprise AI Market

This product expansion is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to capture the enterprise market, a space where competitors like Anthropic are also active. The move follows the recent launch of the OpenAI Deployment Company, a joint venture backed by over $4 billion in funding. This initiative aims to embed OpenAI's technology deeply within corporate infrastructure and essential business processes.

The latest updates to Codex mark a pivotal step in OpenAI's evolution from a research-focused lab to a core enterprise software provider. By equipping non-technical professionals with powerful, role-specific AI tools, the company is positioning Codex as an indispensable asset for a wide array of business functions. This strategic push underscores the growing importance and integration of generative AI in the modern workplace.
